Tulip Gloves

Tulip gloves knit flat on two needles

The Tulip Gloves are a vintage pattern from the 1940’s. They are sized to fit women and have a clever embossed pattern of tulips knit onto the back of each glove.

This patterns uses old UK needles sizes and fingering weight yarn.

Knitted on 2 Needles; Charmingly patterned, perfectly shaped

Materials

2 ozs. of 3-ply Hand Knitting Wool. 1 pair No. 13 knitting needles.

Measurements

To fit size 6-1/2 to 7 hand.

Rep. the last 8 rows twice (rows 9 to 16 inclusive) inc. 2 sts. in the thumb gusset in the next and every following 4th row as before and allowing for the extra sts. in the st.st. portion after each repeat. There will now be 7 inc. sts. made at each side of thumb gusset and 72 sts. on needle.

The Thumb

Next row: Work across (Keeping panel of patt. correct) until 23 sts. rem.; turn and cast on 2 sts. and p. 18 back turn and cast on 2 sts. (20 sts.). Work in st.st. on these 20 sts. for 2 ins. (or required length).

Shape Top: (r.s.f.)

NOTE: This shaping applies to the tops of all fingers.

1st row: K., working tog. every 2nd and 3rd st.

2nd row: P.

3rd row: K. 2 tog. all along row. Break off wool, thread through rem. sts. and sew down seam.

With r.s.f. rejoin wool and pick up and k. 4 sts. from base of thumb and work to end of row.

Work 14 more rows across all sts., thus ending with a 7th patt. row and there will be 60 sts. on needle.

Next row: P. 36, k. 3, p. 2, p. 2 tog. p. 4, p. 2 tog. p. 2, k. 3, p. 6 (58 sts.).

First Finger

Next row: K. 37, turn and cast on 1 st. p. 17 back, then turn and cast on 1 st. (18 sts.).

Cont. in st.st. on these 18 sts. for 2-3/4 ins. (or length required).

Shape top as for thumb and sew down seam to base.

Second Finger (r.s.f.)

Rejoin wool and pick up and k. 2 sts. from the base of first finger, k. 9, turn and cast on 1 st. P. 19 back, then turn and cast on 1 st. (20 sts.).

Cont. in st.st. on these 20 sts. for 3 ins. (or length required).

Shape top and sew down seam.

Third Finger (r.s.f.)

Rejoin wool and pick up 3 sts. from base of second finger, k. 6, turn and cast on 1 st. P. 16 back, then turn and cast on 1 st. (17 sts.).

Cont. on these sts. for 2-1/2 ins. (or length required).

Shape top and sew down seam.

Fourth Finger

Rejoin wool and pick up and k. 2 sts. from base of third finger, k. to end. Cont. on these 16 sts. for 2 ins. (or length required).

Shape top and sew down seam of glove.

L. H. GLOVE

Work as for R. H. until ribbing is completed (58 sts.).

The patt. panel is now worked at the opposite side of work.

Press gloves lightly, taking care not to flatten patt. too much.
