This vintage pattern for fingerless mitts was published in 1933.
This pattern uses old UK knitting needles sizes and fingering weight yarn.
Fingerless mitts. First published in 1933
Pattern
Materials Required
3oz Greenock Super Fingering, 4 or 5 ply.
A set of Knitting Needles, size 12.
Cast on 48 stitches and knit 2 plain and 2 purl for 30 rounds. This forms the wrist.
Knit 10 plain rounds;
then knit the thumb thus:
Round 1: Knit 2, make 1, knit 2, make 1, then knit to the end.
Rounds 2-3: Plain.
Round 4: Knit 2, make 1. knit 4, make 1, knit to the end.
Rounds 5-6: Plain.
Round 7: Knit 2, make 1, knit 6, make 1, knit to the end.
Rounds 8-9: Plain.
Round 10: Knit 2, make 1, knit 8. make 1. knit to the end.
Rounds 11-12: Plain.
Round 13: Knit 2, make 1, knit 10, make 1, knit to the end.
Rounds 14-15: Plain.
Round 16: Knit 2, make 1, knit 12, make 1, knit to the end.
Rounds 17-18: Plain.
Round 19: Knit 2, make 1, knit 14, make 1, knit to the end.
Rounds 20-21: Plain.
Round 22: Knit 2, make 1, knit 16, make 1, knit to the end.
Rounds 23-24: Plain
Round 25: Knit 2, make 1, knit 18, make 1, knit to the end.
Rounds 26-27: Plain.
Round 28: Knit 2, make 1, knit 20, make 1, knit to the end.
Round 29: Knit 3, then slip off on a bit of wool 20 stitches, and knit plain the rest of the round.
Knit 10 rounds plain.
Then knit 10 rounds, 2 plain and 2 purl, and cast off loosely,
Knit the rest of the thumb thus:
Take up the 20 stitches of the wool on to three needles, adding two more stitches where the opening is.
Knit 4 rounds plain.
Then knit 4 rounds, 2 plain and 2 purl, and cast off loosely.
Fasten off the ends.
