Apple Crumble

Recipe for apple crumble, a baked apple desert with a crunchy topping

Baked apple with a crunchy topping


1/2 cup self raising flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 egg, lightly beaten
3/4 cup water
Vanilla essence to taste
1 tablespoon lemon juice
4 cups apple slices
1/4 cup each sultanas and raisins
3 tablespoons chopped, blanched almonds

1/2 cup self raising flour
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar pinch salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons grated lemon rind
2oz butter


Sift together flour, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Mix together egg, water, vanilla essence and lemon juice, add the apple slices, sultanas, raisins, and almonds.

Mix in the dry ingredients and turn into a greased oven dish.

Combine flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon and lemon rind of the topping ingredients, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Sprinkle over apples and bake in a moderate oven about 1 hour.

Serve warm with cream or ice cream.
