Very pretty and quite simple to knit is this unusual cosy. It is knitted in two shades of wool; the stripe being a very decided contrast. The original was rust with a very dark brown stripe.
Other two-tone effects to blend nicely are Brown and Bright Green; Lemon and Coronation Blue; Bois-de-rose and Black; Lime and Black, etc.
Materials required
2 ozs. of 4-ply Rust (fingering weight).
1 oz. of 4-ply Dark Brown.
1 pair Old UK Size No. 12 Knitting Needles
Pattern
Using the dark brown wool cast on 56 stitches.
1st Row: *(K1, P1, K1) into 1st st. Purl 3 tog., * repeat to end of row.
2nd Row: Purl.
3rd Row: *Purl 3 tog. (K1, P1, K1) into next st.* repeat to end of row.
4th Row: Purl. Break off brown and join in rust.
5th Row: (K1, P1, K1) into 1st st. Purl 3 tog. Turn.
6th Row: Purl.
7th Row: *Purl 3 tog. (K1, P1, K1) into next st.* Repeat from * to * once. Turn.
8th Row: Purl.
9th Row: *(K1, P1, K1) into 1st st. Purl 3 tog.*. Repeat from * to * twice. Turn.
10th Row: Purl.
11th Row: *Purl 3 tog. (K1, P1, K1) into next st.* Repeat from * to * 3 times. Turn.
12th Row : Purl.
13th Row:*(K1, P1, K1) into 1st st. Purl 3 tog.* Repeat from * to * 4 times. Turn.
14th Row: Purl.
Continue in this manner until all the original (56 brown) stitches have
been worked off. Finishing with a purl row. Break off rust and join in
brown.
Repeat from 1st row 6 times more.
Finish with brown stripe to correspond with beginning. Cast off.
Work another side to correspond.
Draw the centres together at lower edge as illustration shows. Slip stitch the two halves together, stripes meeting, and finish the stripes with dark brown fringe as follows: Cut 6 strands of wool about 4 inches long. Place strands together and fold in half. Using a large crochet hook draw the folded edges through top of stripe (6 loops). Pass the 12 cut edges through centre of the 6 loops and pull knot tight.
Prepare a padded cosy the shape of the knitting.
Press knitting lightly on wrong side and catch to padded cosy invisibly.
When working in a contrasting color the wools should be twisted one over
the other at back of work to avoid a gap
