Original Pattern

Twelve stitches to a pattern, pins No. 10. This may either be done in Shetland or German wool, and is very pretty in black Shetland wool. Cast on 3 stitches; increase at the beginning of each row till you have 12.

First pattern row:—Make 1, knit 2 together, knit 3, make 1, knit 1, make 1, knit 3, knit 2 together, knit 1, make 1.
Second row:—Seamed, making a stitch at the beginning.

Third row:—Make 1, knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 2, make 1, knit 3, make 1, knit 2, knit 2 together, knit 2.
Fourth row:—Seamed, making 1 at the beginning.

Fifth row:—Make 1, knit 2, knit 2 together, knit 1, make 1, knit 5, make 1, knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 3.
Sixth row:—Seamed, making 1 at the beginning.

Seventh row:—Make 1, knit 3, knit 2 together, make 1, knit 7, make 1, knit 2 together, knit 4.
Eighth row:—Seamed, making 1 at the beginning.

Ninth row:—Make 1, knit 5, make 1, knit 3, knit 2 together, knit 4, make 1, and knit the remainder.
Tenth row:—Seamed, making 1 at the beginning.

Eleventh row:—Make 1, knit 2 together, knit 3, make 1, knit 1, make 1, knit 3 (knit 2 together twice), knit 3, make 1, knit 1, make 1, knit 3, knit 2 together, knit remainder.

Twelfth row:—Seamed, make 1 at the beginning.

Thirteenth row:—Make 1, knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 2, make 1, knit 3, make 1, knit 2 (knit 2 together twice), knit 2, make 1, knit 3, make 1, knit 2, knit 2 together, knit the remainder.

Fourteenth row:—Seamed, make 1 at the beginning.

Fifteenth row:—Make 1, knit 2, knit 2 together, knit 1, make 1, knit 5, make 1, knit 1, knit 2 together, * knit 2 together, knit 1, make 1, knit 5, make 1, knit 1, knit 2 together, and repeat from *, knit those left at the end.

Sixteenth row:—Seamed, make 1 at the beginning.

Seventeenth row:—Make 1, knit 3, knit 2 together, make 1, knit 7, make 1, knit 2 together, * knit 2 together, make 1, knit 7, make 1, knit 2 together, and repeat from *, knit those left at the end.

Eighteenth row:—Seamed, make 1 at the beginning.

Nineteenth row:—Make 1, knit 5, make 1, knit 3, knit 2 together, knit 4, make 1, knit 2 together, make 1, knit 3, knit 2 together, knit 4, make 1, knit the rest.

Twentieth row:—Seamed: make 1 at the beginning.

Twenty-first row same as 11th.

The shawl can be made any size by repeating these 10 rows till you have it as large as you wish.

Updated Version

This is a 12-stitch repeat, knitted with US3/3.25mm needles, with lace or fingering weight yarn. This sample was knit in KnitPicks Shadow laceweight, in the colorway Midnight.

Cast on 3 stitches;
Row 1: YO, k2tog, k3, YO, k1, YO, k3, k2tog.
Row 2 and all even rows: YO, purl to end
Row 3: YO, k1, k2tog, k2, YO, k3, YO, k2, k2tog, k2.
Row 5: YO, k2, k2tog, k1, YO, k5, YO, k1, k2tog, k3.
Row 7: YO, k3, k2tog, YO, k7, YO, k2tog, k4.
Row 9: YO, k5, YO, k3, k2tog, k4, YO, k to end.
Row 11: YO, k2tog, k3, YO, k1, YO, k3, (k2tog) twice, k3, YO, k1, YO, k3, k2tog, k to end.
Row 13: YO, k1, k2tog, k2, YO, k3, YO, k2, (k2tog) twice, k2, YO, k3, YO, k2, k2tog, k to end.
Row 15: YO, K2, k2tog, k1, YO, k5, YO, k1, k2tog; * k2tog, k1, YO, k5, YO, k1, k2tog, and repeat from *, k to end.
Row 17: YO, k2tog, YO, k7, YO, k2tog; * k2tog, YO, k7, YO, k2tog, and repeat from *, k to end.
Row 19: CO 1, k5, YO, k3, k2tog, k4, YO, k2tog, YO, k3, k2tog, k4, YO, knit to end.
Row 21: repeat row 11.
