Cloud Drift Baby Shawl

Knitted Shetland baby shawl

Note: You may need to print this pattern in landscape mode at 90% of it’s actual size in order to fit the larger charts on a page.

Materials and Size

Patons Beehive Pearl-Knit, 2-Ply

or Patons Beehive Lady Betty, 3-Ply

47 ins x 47 ins – 9 balls

Knitting Needles, 1 pair UK No 9/3.75mm/US 5 knitting Needles, or size needed to obtain gauge

Tension

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 7 stitches to the inch in width, measured over plain, smooth fabric.

Note To obtain the most satisfactory edges for joining pieces of shawl together, the following points should be noted.

Casting on: Use the two needle method and do not knit into back of sts on first row.

Side Edges: Keeping wool at front of work, slip the first st purlways on every row, take wool to back of work ready for the second stitch. The last stitch should be knitted on every row.

Casting off: Use the ordinary method but work very loosely. When joining the shawl the chain edges should be drawn together.

To Make Up

Using a flat seam, join border seams and stitch cast off edges to centre of shawl. Join ends of edging and stitch to shawl, easing in at corners.

Roll in a damp towel for several hours, then spread out flat, pinning each point out separately with rustless pins and leave until dry.
