Reversible knitted lace scarf
by Miss Margaret Anderson.

This pattern was first published in The Australian Woman’s Mirror, April 28th, 1936. These instructions have been updated into modern knitting language and checked for accuracy using Stitch Maps.

This scarf won an equal-sixth place in the fourth Mirror knitting competition.

Materials

Two skeins of 2-ply Shetland wool, 1 pair No. 11 (3mm) needles. (note from Sarah, I’m estimating this is lace-weight or very light fingering weight wool in 1 ounce skeins)

40 x 10in.

Sew the lace to the scarf, using your preferred method.

If you’d like to learn more about lace knitting and sewing edgings onto your work, I recommend Franklin Habit’s Craftsy Class, Heirloom Lace Edgings*.¬†This class covers pretty much everything you need to know about knitted lace edgings including sewing them on, knitting them on (including how to knit them onto a piece as you knit the centre), how to follow charts and a little history.

  • This is an affiliate link, however I purchased this class myself and thoroughly recommend it.
