Pattern
Please note: the Moss St used thorughout this pattern is the same as US seed stitch.
Right Hand Glove
Cast on 60 sts. and work in K2, P2 for 2½ ins., inc. one st. at the end of last row (61 sts).
Change to patt. (UK moss st / US seed stitch) and work 2 rows.
Commence gusset for thumb:
1st row: Patt. 33, P3, patt. 25.
2nd row: Patt. 25, K3, patt. to end.
3rd row: Patt. 33, P1, (K1, P1 , K1) , all into the next st., P1, patt. to end.
4th row: Patt. 25, K1, patt. 3, K1, patt. to end.
5th row: Patt. 33, P1, patt. 3, P1, patt. to end.
6th row: As 4th row.
7th row: Patt. 33, P1, inc. in next st. (taking care to keep patt. correct), patt. 1, inc. in next st., P1 , patt. to end.
8th row: Patt. 25, K1 , patt. 5, K1, patt. to end.
Rep. these last 4 rows 6 times, i.e., rows 5-8 inclusive. Inc. into the st. immediately after and before the P. st. which marks the thumb gusset, allowing for 2 extra sts. after each inc. There will now be 17 sts. between the P. sts.
Work 2 more rows in patt.
The Thumb
Patt. 52, turn ,
patt. 19, turn, and cast on 3 sts.
Work in patt. on these 22 sts. for 2¼ ins. (or length required).
Shape top as follows:
1st row (R.S.F.): * Patt. 3, work 3 tog., rep. from * twice more, patt. 4.
2nd row: Patt.
3rd row: Patt. 2, work 3 tog, patt. 2, work 3 tog, patt. 2, work 3 tog., patt. 1. Break off wool, thread through rem. sts., and sew down seam of thumb.
Rejoin wool and pick up 3 sts. from base of thumb, patt. to end.
Cont. in patt. for 1½ ins.
Now commence the fingers:
First Finger
Patt. 39, turn , patt. 17, turn, and cast on 3 sts.
Work in patt. on these 20 sts. for 2¾ ins. (or length required) .
Shape top as follows:
1st row: * Patt. 3, work 3 tog., rep. from * to last 2 sts., patt. 2.
2nd row: Patt.
3rd row: Patt. 2, work 3 tog., patt. 2, work 3 tog., patt. 2, work 2 tog. Break off wool and thread through rem. sts. and fasten off as for thumb.
Second Finger
(R.S.F.): Pick up 3 sts. from base of First Finger, patt. 8 sts., turn. Patt. 19 sts., turn, and cast on 3 sts.
Work in patt. on these 22 sts. for 3¾ ins. (or length required) and shape top as follows :
1st row: * Patt. 3, work 3 tog. , rep. from * to last 4 sts., patt. 2, work 2 tog.
2nd row: Patt.
3rd row: Patt. 2, work 3 tog, patt. 2. work 3 tog., patt. 2, work 2 tog., patt. 1.
Finish off as for First Finger.
Third Finger
(R.S.F.): Pick up 3 sts. from base of Second Finger, patt. 7 sts., turn.
Patt. 17 sts., turn, and cast on 3 sts.
Work in patt. on these 20 sts. for 2¾ ins. (or length required).
Shape top and finish off as for First Finger.
Fourth Finger
(R.S.F.): Pick up 3 sts. from base of Third Finger, patt. to end.
Work in patt. across these 17 sts. for 2¼ ins. (or length required).
Shape top as follows:
1st row: (Patt. 3, work 3 tog.) twice, patt. 3, work 2 tog.
2nd row: Patt.
3rd row: (Patt. 3, work 3 tog.) twice.
Break off wool, leaving a sufficient length to fasten off securely and sew down seam of glove.
Left Hand Glove
Work exactly as for R.H. until commencement of thumb gusset.
1st row will read as follows: Patt. 25, P3, patt. to end.
Proceed as for R.H. but there will now be 25 sts. in patt. before the P. st. at beg. of work and 33 sts. in patt. at end of work.
When gusset has been completed, R.S.F. cont. for thumb thus: Patt. 44, turn, and cast on 3 sts.
Patt. 22, turn, work and finish off as for R.H. thumb.
Pick up 3 sts. from the base of thumb and work in patt. across all sts. for 1½ ins.
First Finger
(R.S.F.): Patt. 39, turn, and cast on 3 sts. Patt. 20, turn, and work as for First Finger R.H.
Second Finger
(R.S.F.): Pick up 3 sts. from the base of First Finger, patt. 8 sts., turn, and cast on 3 sts., patt. 22 sts., turn, and work as for Second Finger R.H.
Third Finger
(R.S.F.): Pick up 3 sts. from the base of Second Finger, patt. 7 sts., turn, and cast on 3 sts, patt. 20 sts., turn, and work and finish as for Third Finger R.H.
Fourth Finger
(R.S.F.): Pick up 3 sts. from the base of the Third Finger, patt. to end. Work and finish as for Fourth Finger R.H.
