Materials
With Gauntlets, 3 ounces of 4-ply Super-Fingering wool
Without Gauntlets, 2 ounces of the same wool One set of 4 No 14 (2mm) needles (double pointed)
Size
Average (Note from Sarah: Compared with other patterns of the era I think this is approximately a size 7 1/4, or modern small)
Note: To make Gloves without Gauntlets commence at the 4th round after gauntlet decreasings, casting on 56 sts on 3 needles (20, 20, 16)
Pattern
Right Hand Glove:
Cast on 84 sts on 3 needles (30, 30, 24)
Work in rounds of K3, P3 for 4 ins
1st Dec Round: * K1, K2 tog, P 3, rep from * for round
2nd Round: * K2, P3, rep from * for one round
3rd Round: * K2, P1, P2 tog, rep from * for one round
4th Round: * K2, P 2, rep from * for 3 ins (Commence here for gloves without Gauntlets)
Change to patt:
1st Round: K
2nd Round: * K3, P1, rep from * to end of round
3rd Round: K
4th Round: K1, * P1, K3 rep from * to last 2 sts, K2
Rep these 4 patt rounds twice more (12 rounds in all)
13th Round: Commence gusset for thumb: All inc are made immediately after and before P sts of gusset K2, (P1, K2, P1) gusset, K to end of round
14th Round: K2, (P1, K2, P1) patt, as 2nd rd of patt
15th Round: K2, (P1, inc into both of the next 2 sts, P1), K to end of round
16th Round: K1, P1, (P1, K4, P1), patt to end of round
Cont in patt, inc in every 3rd round of gusset until gusset reads: (P1, K16, P1)
Work 2 rounds after last inc
Place the 18 sts for thumb onto a safety pin
Cast on 4 sts in place of thumb and cont in patt for 1 3/4 ins
Now commence the fingers, which are worked entirely in st-st
First Finger:
K8 off the 1 st needle, and with a darning needle and contrasting wool draw through the next 40 sts
Cast on 2 sts and K rem 8 sts on third needle (18 sts)
Place 6 sts on each of three needles, and K for 2 1/2 ins (or length required), then shape top as follows:
K1 K2tog to end of round
Work 2 rounds, without shaping
Next Round: K2, K2tog to end
Draw wool through rem sts and fasten off firmly
Second Finger:
K7 sts off beg of wool, cast on 3 sts, K last 7 sts off wool, pick up 3 sts at base of first finger. Arrange these sts on 3 needles (7, 7, 6),
K on these 20 sts for 2 3/4 ins (or length required) and shape as for first finger
Third Finger:
K6 off beg of wool, cast on 3 sts, K last 6 sts off wool, pick up 3 sts at base of second finger, arrange these 18 sts on 3 needles,
K for 2 1/2 ins (or length required)
Shape top as for first finger
Fourth Finger:
K rem 14 sts off wool, pick up 4 sts at base of third finger, arrange these 18 sts on 3 needles and K for 2 1/4 ins (or length required)
Shape top as for first finger
Thumb:
K18 gusset sts, pick up 4 sts where 4 were cast on, arrange these sts on 3 needles (7, 7, 8)
Work for 2 ins (or length required)
Shape top: K1, K2tog to end of round, ending K1,
K 2 more rounds
Next Round: K1, K2tog to end of round
Draw wool through these rem sts and fasten off firmly
Left Hand Glove:
This is worked the same as for RH until the gusset is reached
The gusset is worked on the last 6 sts of the first needle, instead of at the beg
The last 6 sts will read: (P1, K2, P1), patt 2
