Materials

Coats Mercer-Crochet No. 10 (20 gm): 7 balls.
1 pair Knitting Needles No. 14. (2mm)
1 Milwards ‘Phantom’ Double Pointed Knitting Needle No. 14.

The above quantity is sufficient for 1 Centrepiece, 4 Place Mats and 4 Glass Mats.

Tension 12 sts = 1″ measured over st st.

Square knit edging

Cast on 45 sts.

1st Row: K.

2nd Row: P.

3rd Row: K.

4th Row: * P2tog, yo; repeat from * to last st, p1.

5th Row: K.

6th Row: P.

7th Row: K.

8th Row: Insert a spare double pointed needle through every stitch of cast-on row, and holding this in front of left hand needle of current row, p a stitch from each needle together, repeating this right across row, so that a hem is formed.

9th Row: * S1 1, k1, psso, k11, k2tog; repeat from * to end.

10th and alternate rows: P.

11th Row: * S1 1, k1, psso, k9, k2tog; repeat from * to end.

13th Row: * S1 1, k1, psso, k7, k2tog; repeat from * to end.

15th Row: * S1 1, k1, psso, k5, k2tog; repeat from * to end.

17th ROW: * S1 1, k1, PSSO, k3, k2tog; repeat from * to end.

19th Row: * S1 1, k1, psso, k1, k2tog; repeat from * to end.

21st Row: * S1 1, k2tog, psso; repeat from * to end. Leave 3 sts on a spare needle.

Work 9 more petals in this way.

Main Section

With smooth side of first petal towards you, pick up 15 sts along from picot edge to 3 sts left at centre, k these 3 sts, pick up 15 sts from centre to further picot edge; repeat this operation across each of the other 9 petals so that all are
united in one row of 330 sts.

1st Row: * P15, p2tog, yo, p16; repeat from * to end.

2nd Row: * K15, k2 tog, yo, k16; repeat from * to end.

3rd Row: As first row.

4th Row: * K2tog, k13, k2tog, yo, k14, k2tog; repeat from * to end.

Cut cotton and thread through remaining sts on needle. Draw up tightly and secure. Without cutting cotton. sew up seam.

PLACE MAT

Petal

Cast on 33 sts.

Work from 1st to 8th row of petal given for centrepiece, then from 13th to 21st row of the same section, noting that all even numbered rows are purled. Leave remaining sts on spare needle. Work 9 more petals.

Main Section

With smooth side of first petal towards you, pick up 10 sts along from picot edge to 3 sts at centre, k these 3 sts, pick up 10 sts from centre to further picot edge; repeat this across 9 other petals (230 sts).

Now work as for centrepiece from 21st to 58th row.

Finish mat as for centrepiece.

GLASS MAT

Cast on 21 sts.

Work from 1st to 8th row of petal given for centrepiece, then from 17th to 21st row of same section, noting that all even numbered rows are purled. Leave remaining sts on spare needle. Work 7 more petals.

Main Section

With smooth side of first petal towards you pick up 5 sts from picot edge to 3 sts left at centre, k these 3 sts, pick up 5 sts from centre to further picot edge; repeat this across 7 other petals (104 sts).

Now work as for centrepiece from 41st to 58th row.

Finish mat as for centrepiece. Damp and press.
