Knitted Cushion from 1937

Free knitting pattern for a colourful cushion cover.

Vintage knitted cushion with diamond and triangle pattern

Materials

14 ozs. Wildflower Sports Wool, the original was worked with 8 ozs. Brown (shade 22000), 4 ozs Fawn (shade 621) and 2 ozs. Yellow (shade 4008).
Two Old UK Size No. 6 (5mm) “Beehive” Knitting Needles measured by the Beehive gauge.
Cushion Pad.

Measurements

20 ins x 20 ins.

Tension

Work at a tension to produce 5 stitches to the inch, measured over the plain, smooth fabric.

Pattern

Using the Brown Wool and commencing at the corner, cast on 2 stitches.

1st Row: Increase once in each stitch.

2nd Row: Knit plain.

Continue in plain knitting, increasing once at each end of the needle in the next and every alternate row until there are 68 stitches on the needle.

Knit 1 row plain.

Break off the Brown Wool. Join in the Fawn.

Proceed as follows:-
1st. Row: Knit plain.

2nd Row: K1, purl to the last stitch, K1.

Repeat these two rows once.

Break off the Fawn Wool. Join in the Yellow.

Continue in plain, smooth fabric, working in stripes of 2 rows in Yellow and 4 rows in Fawn until the thirteenth Fawn stripe has been worked. Break off the Fawn Wool. Join in the Brown.

Work 2 rows in plain knitting.

Continue in plain knitting, decreasing once at each end of the needle in next and every alternate row until 2 stitches remain. Cast off.

Using the Brown Wool, with the right side of the work facing, knit up 68 stitches evenly along one straight side of striped square. Knit 1. row plain.

Continue in plain knitting, decreasing once at each end of the needle in the next and every alternate row until 2 stitches remain. Cast off.

Knit up 68 stitches along the other side and work to correspond.

Work another piece in the same manner.

To Make Up the Cushion

With a damp cloth and hot iron press carefully. Sew the two halves together, leaving one side open, insert cushion pad and sew up side.

Using eight strands of Brown wool, make a twisted cord 3¾ yds. long. Sew cord round cushion, making three loops at each comer.
