Swansea Sweater

Fitted vintage pullover with diamond leaf lace pattern design

Materials

4 skeins (short sleeves), 5 skeins (long sleeves) “Sun-Glo” Shrinkproof 2-ply Fingering Wool, Shade No. 2332 (Aqua);

2 prs. needles, UK Nos 10/3.25mm/US 3 and UK 12/2.75mm/US 2

1 crochet hook;

press studs.

Measurements

Length from top
of shoulder, 20″;
bust, 32/34″;
length of sleeve seam, 4½”.
Note: For 36″ bust, use UK No 9/3.75mm/US 5 instead of No. 10 needles.

Pattern

A multiple of 12 sts, plus 3 extra sts

Tension

15 sts, 2″; 18 rows, 2″.

Abbreviations

K: Knit.
P: Purl.
St: Stitch.
Tog: Together.
Sl: Slip
Yo: Yarn over
Psso: Pass slip stitch over.
Tbl: Through back of loops.
DC: Double crochet. (US single crochet)
Bl: blue.
St st (Stocking Stitch): K1 row, P1 row alternately.
Garter St: Knit every row.
Moss st: With an uneven number of sts work as follows: K1,* P1, K1, repeat from * to end of row.  Repeat this row throughout.

With an even number of sts work as follows:
1st Row: * K1, P1, repeat from * to end of row.
2nd Row: * P1, K1, repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat 1st and 2nd row alternately.

Pattern

Back

Using No. 12 needles, cast on 100 sts Work in rib of K1, P1, for 3½” (working 1st row into back of sts).

Change to No. 10 needles, P5, * P twice into next st, P3, repeat from * to last 7 sts, P twice into next st, P6 (123 sts).

1st Row: K2, * yo, K4, sl 1, K2tog, psso, K4, yo, K1, repeat from * to last st, K1.

2nd and Alternate Rows: P

3rd Row: K3, * yo, K3, sl 1, K2tog, psso, K3, yo, K3, repeat from * to end.

5th Row: K4, * yo, bind 7 sts as follows:

Insert right-hand needle between 7th and 8th sts on left-hand needle and draw a loop of wool through, sl. loop on to left-hand needle and P it together with 1st st on needle through the back of the loops,  K1, slip 1, K2tog, psso, K2, yo, K5, repeat from * ending row with K4 instead of K5.

7th Row: K1, K2tog, K4, yo, K1, yo, K4, * sl 1, K2tog, psso, K4, yo, K1, yo, K4, repeat from * to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.

9th Row: K1, K2tog, (K3, yo) twice, K3, * sl 1, K2tog, psso, (K3, yo) twice, K3, repeat from * to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.

11th Row: K1, bind 4 sts as follows:

Insert right-hand needle between 4th and 5th sts on left-hand needle and draw a loop of wool through, sl. loop on to left-hand needle and P it together with 1st st on needle through back of sts K2tog, K1, yo, K5, yo,* bind 7, K1, sl 1, K2tog, psso, K2, yo, K5, yo, repeat from * to last 5 sts, bind 4, K1, K2tog, K1.

12th Row: P

Repeat these 12 rows and when work measures 12½” shape armholes by casting off 4 sts at the beginning of the next 6 rows.

When armholes measure 7″ shape shoulders by casting off 10 sts at the beginning of the next 6 rows.

Cast off.

Front

Work the same as for back until armholes measure 5½”

Next Row: Work 40 sts (leave on a spare needle), cast off 19 sts, work 40 sts

Continue on last 40 sts and K2tog at neck edge every row until decreased to 30 sts

When armhole measures 7″ shape shoulder by casting off 10 sts at armhole edge every 2nd row 3 times.

Join wool at neck edge and work other side to correspond.

Short Sleeves

Using No. 12 needles, cast on 80 sts

Work in rib of K1, P1, for 1″ (working 1st row into back of sts).

Change to No. 10 needles.

P 4, * P twice into next st, P3, repeat from * to end (99 sts).

Work in pattern as for back until work measures 4½”. K2tog each end of every row until decreased to 25 sts

Cast off.

Long Sleeves

Using No. 12 needles, cast on 66 sts

Work in rib of K1, P1, for 3″ (working 1st row into back of sts).

Change to No. 10 needles, P1 row, purling twice into every 2nd st (99 sts).

Work in pattern as for back and when sleeve seam measures 19″ or required length, shape the top the same as for short sleeves.

Neckband

Join right shoulder seam.

With right side of work towards you, using No. 12 needles, pick up and k about 112 sts around neck

P1 row.

Work in st st for 1½”·

Cast off loosely. Fold in half and stitch back on to wrong side of work

Shoulder Pads

Using No. 10 needles, cast on 48 sts

Work in st st for 6″. Cast off.

Fold diagonally, lightly pad with cotton wool and sew up edges.

To Make Up

Press with a warm iron and damp cloth.

Sew up seams, leaving an opening on left shoulder.

Sew in sleeves and shoulder pads.

Work 2 rows DC along back of shoulder opening and 1 row along front.

Sew on press studs.
