Meadowsweet

Meadowsweet vintage sweater/jumper with wavy rib pattern
from Sun Glo Knitting Book Series 79

Materials

7 skeins (short sleeves), 9 skeins (long sleeves), “SunGlo” shrinkproof super 3-ply fingering wool or “Sun-Glo” shrinkproof crepe wool, shade No. 2255 (Blue).

2 pairs Needles, Old UK Nos. 10 and 12/US 3 and 3/Metric 3.25mm and 2.75mm

6 small buttons.

Measurements

Length from top of shoulder 19½ inches.
Bust 32/ 34 inches.
Length of sleeve seam 5 inches.

NOTE: For 36 inch bust, use Old UK No. 9/US 5/metric 3.75mm instead of No. 10 needles.

Tension

7 sts 1 inch. 9 rows 1 inch.

Back

Using larger needles, commence at the side seam and cast on 64 sts Work the 1st row following into back of sts

1st Row: K.

2nd Row: P.

3rd Row: *K4, (k2tog) 4 times, k4, k. twice into each of the next 4 sts, repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

4th Row: P.

K. 2 rows.

7th Row: P. to last st., p. twice into last st.

8th Row: K. twice into 1st st., k. to end.

9th Row: K. to last st., k. twice into last st.

10th Row: P. twice into 1st st., p. to end.

11th Row:* K4, (k2tog) 4 times, k4, k. twice into each of the next 4 sts; repeat from * to last 8 sts, k8.

12th Row: P. twice into 1st st., p. to end.

13th Row: K.

14th Row: K. twice into 1st st., k. to end.

15th Row: P.

16th Row: K. twice into 1st st., k. to end.

17th Row: K.

18th Row: P. twice into 1st st., p. to end.

19th Row: * K4, (k2tog) 4 times, k4, k. twice into each of the next 4 sts, repeat from * to last 12 sts, k12.

20th Row: Cast on 40 sts, p. purling into back of cast on sts (112 sts ).

K. 2 rows.

P. 1 row.

K. 2 rows.

P. 1 row.

27th Row: * K4, (k2tog) 4 times, k4, k. twice into each of the next 4 sts, repeat from * to last 12 sts, k12.

28th Row: P.

Repeat from the 21st to 28th rows inclusive to form the pattern and increase 1 st. at the end of the 21st row (shoulder edge) and then every 10th row until increased to 115 sts

Work 32 rows.

Work back opening as follows: Next Row: Cast off 20 sts, p. to end.

Next Row: Work to end, cast on 20 sts

Work 32 rows.

Decrease 1 st. at shoulder edge of the next and then every 10th row until decreased to 112 sts

Work 10 rows.

Cast off 40 sts at shoulder of the next row to form the armhole.

K2tog at armhole edge every 2nd row 4 times, then every row 4 times.

Work 6 rows.

Cast off.

Front

Work the same as for back until increased to 115 sts

Work 8 rows.

To shape neck, cast off 8 sts at shoulder edge of the next row.

K2tog at neck edge every 2nd row 4 times.

Work 32 rows.

Increase 1 st. at neck edge every 2nd row 4 times.

Cast on 8 sts at neck edge of the next row.

Continue in pattern and decrease 1 st. at shoulder edge on the 8th and then every 10th row until decreased to 112 sts

Work 10 rows then shape armhole the same as for back.

Short Sleeves

Using larger needles and commencing at side seam, cast on 24 sts. Work in pattern, increasing 1 st. at the beginning of every 2nd row until increased to 56 sts

Work 48 rows.

K2tog at shaped edge every 2nd row until decreased to 24 sts

Cast off.

Long Sleeves

Using larger needles and commencing at side seam, cast on 24 sts

1st Row: K.

2nd Row: P. twice into 1st st., p. to end, cast on 8 sts

Continue in pattern increasing 1 st. at beginning of every 2nd row and casting on 8 sts at the end of every 2nd row until increased to 114 sts

Continue to increase 1 st. at the beginning of every 2nd row keeping the other end straight until increased to 136 sts

Work 48 rows.

Decrease 1 st. at shaped edge every 2nd row until decreased to 114 sts, then continue to decrease 1 st. at top and cast off 8 sts at lower edge every 2nd row until decreased to 24 sts

Cast off.

Neckband

Join shoulder seams.

With right side of work towards you, using smaller needles, pick up and k 112 sts around neck.

Work in rib of k1, p1, for ¾ inch.

Cast off in ribbing.

Basques

With right side of back towards you, using smaller needles, pick up and k. 96 sts along lower edge.

Work in rib of k1, p1, for 3½ inches.

Cast off in ribbing. Work front basque the same.

Cuffs

With right side of work towards you, pick up and k. 76 sts along lower edge of short sleeves or 60 along lower edge of long sleeves.

Work in rib of k1, p1, working 1½ inches for short sleeves, and 3 inches for long sleeves. Cast off in ribbing.

Shoulder Pads

Using larger needles cast on 24 sts

Work 24 rows st.st. Cast off.

Fold in half, pad with cotton wool and sew up edges.

To Make Up

Press with a warm iron and damp cloth.

Gather sleeves around armholes and sew in shoulder pads.

Sew up seams. Work 1 row of DC (UK double crochet/US single crochet). down back opening and make 6 loops of chain on one side to form buttonholes.

Sew on buttons.
