Materials

Patons Bonny Sports Wool

Quantity – 1 lb. 4 ozs.

Knitting Needles – 1 pair UK No. 6/5mm/US 8

A Crochet Hook.

One Pair of Shoulder Pads.

Five Buttons.

Measurement

to fit 34-35 inch bust

Length from top of shoulder – 23 ins.
Length of sleeve from under-arm – 17½ ins.
(or length desired)

Tension

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 3 patterns to 1¾ inches in width.

Pattern

The Left Front

Cast on 46 stitches. ** 1st row: (Wrong side of work) K1, * P2, K1, repeat from * to end of row.

2nd row: K1, * insert right-hand needle from back to front between next 2 sts, knit into front of second st, but before slipping it off, knit first st, slip both sts off needle together (this will now be termed “Cross” throughout), P1, repeat from * to last 3 sts, “Cross,” K1.

3rd row: Like 1st row.

4th row: K1, * K2, P1. repeat from * to last 3 sts, K3. **

Repeat from 1st to 3rd row once.

Continue in pattern, decreasing once at beginning of needle in next and every following 4th row, until 37 sts remain.

Work 7 rows without shaping.

Increase once at beginning of needle in next and every following 6th row, until there are 43 sts on needle.

Work 17 rows without shaping.

Cast off 5 sts at beginning of next row.

Decrease once at beginning of needle in every alternate row four times, whilst at same time decreasing once at end of needle in 2nd and every following 3rd row, until 21 sts remain.

Work 6 rows without shaping.

Shape for shoulder as follows:

1st row: Work in pattern to last 7 sts, turn .

2nd and 4th rows: Work in pattern to end of row.

3rd row: Work in pattern to last 14 sts, turn.

5th row: Like 2nd row. Cast off.

The Right Front

Work to correspond with Left Front, working shapings at opposite ends of needle.

The Back

Cast on 91 stitches.

Work as given from ** to ** for Left Front once, then from ** to 3rd row once

Continue in pattern, decreasing once at each end of needle in next and every following 4th row, until 73 sts remain.

Work 7 rows without shaping.

Increase once at each end of needle in next and every following 6th row, until there are 85 sts on needle.

Work 17 rows without shaping.

Cast off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows, then decrease once at each end of needle in next and every alternate row, until 67 sts remain.

Continue without shaping until arm-holes measure same as Front arm-holes.

Shape for shoulders as follows:

1st and 2nd rows: Work in pattern to last 7 sts, turn.

3rd and 4th rows: Work in pattern to last 14 sts, turn.

5th and 6th rows: Work in pattern to last 21 sts, turn.

7th row: Work in pattern to end of row. Cast off.

The Sleeves

Cast on 37 stitches.

Work as given from ** to ** for Left Front twice, then from ** to 3rd row once.

Continue in pattern, increasing once at each end of needle in next and every following 6th row, until there are 67 sts on needle.

Continue without shaping until work measures 17½ ins. (or length desired) from commencement.

Decrease once at each end of needle in next and every alternate row, until 31 sts. remain

Work 1 row. Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

To Make Up Coat

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves, placing seam to seam.

Using Crochet Hook, work 4 rows of dc (US single crochet) along front edges and across back of neck, making 1st button-hole 7 ins. from lower edge and 4 more 1¾ ins. apart in 3rd row.

Work 1 row of dc all round outer edges of Coat and sleeves.

Sew shoulder pads in position. Sew on buttons to correspond with button-holes.
