Dromana Bolero/Cardigan

Vintage cardigan with long or short sleeved options

Materials

6 skeins (short sleeves), 8 skeins (long sleeves) “Sun-Glo” Shrinkproof 3-ply Fingering Wool, Shade No. 1075 (White);

Needles, UK No 10/3.25mm/US 3

Measurements

Length from top of shoulder, 16½”;
bust, 32/34″;
length of sleeve seam, 4″.
Note: For 36″ bust, use UK No 9/3.75mm/US 5 instead of No. 10 needles.

Tension

7 sts, 1″; 9 rows, 1″.

Abbreviations

K: Knit.
P: Purl.
St: Stitch.
Tog: Together.
Sl: Slip
Yo: Yarn over
Psso: Pass slip stitch over.
Tbl: Through back of loops.
DC: Double crochet. (US single crochet)
Bl: blue.
St st (Stocking Stitch): K1 row, P1 row alternately.
Garter St: Knit every row.
Moss st: With an uneven number of sts work as follows: K1,* P1, K1, repeat from * to end of row.  Repeat this row throughout.

With an even number of sts work as follows:
1st Row: * K1, P1, repeat from * to end of row.
2nd Row: * P1, K1, repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat 1st and 2nd row alternately.

Pattern

Back

Using No. 10 needles, cast on 114 sts, K8 rows (working 1st row into back of sts).

Work in following pattern:

1st Row: K

2nd Row: P

3rd Row: * K1, yo, K2tog, repeat from * to end.

4th Row: Repeat 3rd row.

Repeat these 4 rows, and when work measures 9″ shape armholes by casting of 3 sts at the beginning of the next 8 rows.

When armholes measure 7″ shape shoulders by casting off 10 sts at the beginning of the next 6 rows.

Cast off.

Left Front

Using No. 10 needles, cast on 7 sts

Work in garter st for 9″. (Leave on a spare needle.)

Using No. 10 needles, cast on 51 sts

1st Row: K (working into back of cast on sts).

2nd Row: Cast on 3 sts, P to end.

3rd Row: Work in pattern.

4th Row: Cast on 3 sts, work in pattern to end.

Repeat the last 4 rows (63 sts).

Next Row: K63, then k the 7 sts from spare needle.

Stitch the remainder along lower edge, easing the border around the shaped edge.

Next Row: K7, P63.

Next Row: Work 63 sts in pattern, K7.

Next Row: K7, work 63 sts in pattern.

Continue in pattern, keeping the 7 border sts in garter st and when work measures 9″ cast off 3 sts at armhole-edge, work to last 9 sts, k2tog, K7.

Continue to decrease 1 st at centre front (inside border) every 3rd row, and cast off 3 sts at armhole edge every 2nd row 3 more times.

Continue to decrease 1 st at centre front every 3rd row until decreased to 37 sts

When armhole measures 7″ shape shoulder by casting off 10 sts at armhole edge every 2nd row 3 times.

K remaining 7 sts for 2¼”

Cast off.

Right Front

Work to correspond with left front, working border and shapings at opposite ends.

Short Sleeves

Using No. 10 needles, cast on 78 sts

K 8 rows (working 1st row into back of sts).

Work in pattern, increasing 1 st each end of every 2nd row until increased to 90 sts

When sleeve seam measures 4″, K2tog each end of every 2nd row until decreased to 60 sts, then every row until decreased to 30 sts. Cast off.

Long Sleeves

Using No. 10 needles, cast on 48 sts

K8 rows (working 1st row into back of sts).

Work in pattern for 2″, then increase 1 st each end of every 6th row until increased to 90 sts

When sleeve seam measures 19″ or required length, shape the top the same as for short sleeves.

Shoulder Pads

Using No. 10 needles, cast on 44 sts

Work in st st for 6″. Cast off.

Fold diagonally, lightly pad with cotton wool and sew up edges.

To Make Up

Press with a warm iron and damp cloth.

Sew up seams, sew in sleeves and shoulder pads.

Join borders at back of neck
