Chuff-Chuff Train Sweater/Jumper - free knitting pattern

Materials

  • Size A – 4 ozs. yellow or fawn 4-ply wool (fingering weight); 1 oz. white.
  • Size B – 5 ozs. yellow or fawn 4-ply wool (fingering weight); 1 oz. white.
  • ½ oz. green or red 4-ply wool; ¼ oz. brown or green 4-ply wool;
  • 1 pr. each old UK Nos. 10/ US 3 / 3.25mm and old UK 12 / US 2 / 2.75mm needles;
  • 3 small buttons.

Size

To fit:
Size A – 22 inch chest; length from top of shoulder, 13 inches; length of sleeve at underarm, 9 inches.
Size B – 26 inch chest; length from top of shoulder, 16
inches; length of sleeve at underarm, 12 inches.

Gauge

7½ stitches to 1 inch on larger needles.

Pattern

Front

Instructions for the two different sizes are represented after the letter depicting their size. For example, the cast on number for size A is written thus “A 80sts” and size B is written “B 96sts”

** Using smaller needles and yellow or fawn wool cast on A 80 sts, B 96 sts.

1st row: * K2, P2, repeat from * to end.

Repeat 1st row for 1½ inches.

Change to larger sized needles.
Work A 36 rows, B 56 rows in stocking st. **

Continue in stocking st, working from chart.

1st row of chart: Knit A 44 sts, B 52 sts in yellow or fawn, A 36 sts, B 44 sts white.

2nd row: Purl A 37 sts, B 45 sts white, A 43 sts, B 51 sts yellow or fawn.

Complete front from chart.

Key: white = white
fawn = fawn or yellow
brown = brown or green
red = red or green

Back

Work as given from ** to ** for front. Then continue in stocking st. till work measures same as front to armhole shaping.

Shape Armhole

Cast off A 5 sts, B 6 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Then dec. once at each end of needle in next and every alt. row till A 62 sts, B 72 sts. remain.

Work without shaping till work measures same as front at armhole edge.

Shape Shoulders

1st and 2nd rows: Work to last A 9 sts, B 12 sts, turn.

3rd row: Work to end. Cast off.

Sleeves (both alike)

Using smaller needles and yellow or fawn wool cast on A 44 sts, B 48 sts.

Work in rib of K2, P2 for 2 inches.

Change to larger needles. Work in stocking st, inc. once each end of needle in 3rd and every following 6th row till there are A 62 sts, B 72 sts on needle.

Work without shaping till work measures A 9 inches, B 12 inches.

Cast off A 5 sts, B 6 sts at beg. of next 2 rows.

Then dec. each end of needle in next and every alt. row 3 times.

Then every row till 20 sts. remain

Cast off 6 sts at beg. of next 2 rows. Cast off remaining sts.

Neckband

Sew up right shoulder.

Using smaller needles and yellow or fawn wool, with right side facing, pick up evenly round neck A 84 sts, B 92 sts.

Work in rib of K2, P2 for 6 rows.

Cast off in rib.

To Make Up

Press lightly. Sew up left shoulder for ½ inch.

Sew in sleeves. Sew up side and sleeve seams.

Using yellow or fawn wool work spot in centre of wheels. Make 3 loops on shoulder. Sew on buttons.
