Basket Stitch Pullover

Mans fitted jumper/sweater with basket stitch patterning

Materials

15 Skeins (1 oz) Lincoln Mills Triple Twist “Daphne” Wool
Set UK No 10/3.25mm/US 3 and 1 pair UK No 9/3.75mm/US 5 knitting needles.

Measurements

To fit 38 inch chest. Length from shoulder to lower edge, 23½ inches.
Length of sleeve seam, 20½ inches.

Tension

13 sts to 2 inches, 9 rows to 1 inch.

Pattern

Back

With No. 10 needles cast on 114 sts

1st Row: Slip 1, * K1, P1, repeat from * to the last st, K1.

Repeat this row 31 times, increasing once at each end of the last row (116 sts).

Change to No. 9 needles and proceed with pattern as follows:

1st and Every. Alternate Row Knit.

2nd Row: Purl.

4th and 6th Rows: K2, * P2, K8, repeat from * to last 4 sts, P2, K2.

8th Row: Purl.

10th and 12th Rows: K7, * P2, K8, repeat from * to last 9 sts, P2, K7.

These 12 rows complete one pattern.

Continue in pattern until 102 rows from the ribbing.

Armhole Shaping

103rd and 104th Rows: Cast off 4 sts, work in pattern to end of row.

105th and 106th Rows: Cast off 2 sts at beginning of row, work in pattern to end of row.

“Keeping the continuity of the pattern, K2tog at each end of the next and every alternate row until 92 sts remain.

Work without further shaping until 174 pattern rows have been completed.

Shoulder Shaping

Cast off 7 sts at the beginning of the next 8 rows. Cast off remaining sts firmly.

Front

Work exactly as given for the back until 132 pattern rows have been completed.

133rd Row: K38, cast off 16 sts, K38.

Work on these last 38 sts for the right side of neck.

134th Row Purl.

135th Row: K1, K2tog, knit to end of row.

Keeping continuity of the pattern, decrease once at the neck edge in every alternate row until 28 sts remain.

Continue without further shaping until 174 pattern rows have been worked.

Shoulder Shaping

Cast off 7 sts at armhole edge of the next 4 rows.

Join wool at centre front and complete the left side to correspond with the right side.

Neck Band

Press back and front of garment carefully with warm iron and damp cloth. Join shoulder seams and with right side of work facing, pick up and knit 50 sts. with 1st needle, 54 sts with second needle and 50 sts with the third needle. Knit in rib, K1, P1, for 8 rounds. Cast off loosely.

Sleeve

Using No. 10 needles cast on 66 sts

1st Row: Slip 1, * K1, P1, repeat from * to last st, K1.

Repeat this row for 3½ inches.

Change to No. 9 needles and knit in pattern as for back, increasing at each end of the 13th row and every 9th row following until 84 sts, then at each end of every 12th row until 88 sts

Continue without further shaping until 150 rows from cuff ribbing.

Armhole Shaping

1st and 2nd Rows: Cast off 4 sts at beginning of each row, work in pattern to end of row.

Cast off 2 sts at beginning of every following row until 54 sts remain, then 1 st at beginning of each row until 28 sts remain.

Cast off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows.

Cast off remaining sts

To Make Up

Press very lightly with warm iron, so as not to flatten the pattern.

Press neck band, shoulder seams and sleeves carefully.

Sew up side and sleeve seams and sew in sleeves, placing seam to seam.

Press all seams.
