Wee Woollie Winkie Dressing Gown and Duck Toy

Toddler's dressing gown with duck pockets. Free knitting pattern.

Materials

  • 16 ozs. blanket wool (any yarn with a recommended gauge of 18sts to 4″)
  • 1 oz. 4-ply fingering white for duck pockets or toy
  • small quantity of orange or red for bill and legs of duck, and cotton-wool (polyester toy filling for toy or batting for pocket) for padding
  • 1 pr. each old UK Nos. 4, 11 and 12/US 10, 3 and 2/metric 6, 3 and 2.75mm needles
  • 1 crochet hook
  • 10 buttons.

Measurements

Length from top of shoulder, 32 inches;

width around underarm, 26 inches;

sleeve from underarm, 10½ inches or length desired.

Tension

4½ stitches to 1 inch (18sts to 4 inches)

Pattern

Back

Cast on 80 sts using No. 4/US 10/6mm needles. 1st row: * K.1, P.1, repeat from * to end.

2nd row: * P.1, K.1, repeat from * to end.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows 4 times.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit.

2nd row: Purl.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows once.

5th row: K.3, P.2, * K.6, P.2, repeat from * to last 3 sts., K.3.

6th row: P.3, K.2, * P.6, K.2, repeat from * to last 3 sts., P.3.

7th row: K2tog, knit plain to last 2 sts., K2tog.

8th and 10th rows: Purl.

9th row: Knit plain.

11th row: K.6, * P.2, K.6, repeat from * to end.

12th row: P.6, * K.2, P.6, repeat from * to end.

13th and 15th rows: Like 1st row.

Work 16 rows without shaping, making a buttonhole in 4th row.

Shape armhole as follows (armhole edge):

1st row: Cast off 3 sts., work in pattern to end.

2nd row: K.1, P.1, K.1, (yo) twice, K2tog, P.1, work in patt. to last 2 sts., K2tog.

3rd row: Work in patt.

4th row: Work in patt. to last 2 sts., K2tog.

Work 13 rows without shaping, making a buttonhole as before in 12th row.

Cast off 7 sts. at beg. of next row, then dec. once at neck edge in every alt. row till 14 sts. remain.

Work 1 row.

To Shape Shoulder:

1st row: Work 7 sts., turn.

2nd row: Work to end. Cast off.

Left Side

Work to correspond with right side, omitting buttonholes and working border and shapings at opposite ends of needle.

Sleeve

Cast on 32 sts.

1st row: * K.1, P.1, repeat from * to end.

2nd row: * P.1, K.1, repeat from * to end.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows twice.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: Purl.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows once.

5th row: K.3, P.2, * K.6, P.2, repeat from * to last 3 sts., K.3.

6th row: P.1, K.2, * P.6, K.2, repeat from * to last 3 sts., P.3.

7th row: Like 1st row.

8th and 10th rows: Like 2nd row.

9th row: Inc. once in first st., knit to last st., inc. once.

Keeping continuity of patt., inc. once at each end of needle in every following 10th row till there are 40 sts. on needle.

Work without shaping till work measures 10 inches from commencement.

Cast off 2 sts. at beg. of every row till 12 sts. remain.

Cast off.

Collar

Cast on 47 sts.

1st row: Inc. once in first st., * P.1, K.1, repeat from * to last 2 sts., inc. once in next st., K.1.

2nd row: Inc. once in first st., * K.1, P.1, repeat from * to last 2 sts., inc. once in next st., K.1.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows for 2 inches. Cast off.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron press lightly.

Sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves.

Sew collar in position.

Work 1 row of slip stitch round collar.

Sew on buttons. Make a plaited cord, and 2 tassels for each end.

Make 2 crochet loops and attach to side seam to thread cord. Follow instructions for pocket.

The Duck Pocket or Toy

Using 4 ply wool and No. 11/US 3/3mm needles, cast on 11 sts.

1st row: K.1, * P.1, K.1, repeat from * to end.

2nd row: lnc. once in first st., P.1, * K.1, P.1, repeat from * to last st., inc. once.

Continue in moss st., inc. at each end of needle till there are 17 sts.

5th row: (Tail end) Cast on 2 sts., work to last st., inc. once.

6th and 7th rows: Work in moss st., inc. once each end of needle.

8th row: Work in moss st. to last st., inc. once (25 sts.).

Continue in moss st., inc. once each end of needle in every alt. row till there are 31 sts., then every 4th row till there are 33 sts.

Work 3 rows in moss st.

26th row: Dec. once, work in moss st. to last st., inc. once.

27th and 29th rows: Work in moss st.

28th row: Dec., work in moss st. to last 2 sts., dec. once.

30th row: Dec. once, work in moss st. to end (30 sts.).

31st row: Moss st. 16. turn.

32nd, 34th and 36th rows: Work in moss st. to end.

33rd row: Moss st. 12, turn.

35th row: Moss st. 8, turn.

Make another piece in same manner.

Bill

Using No. 12/US 2/2.75mm needles and red or orange wool cast on 9 sts.

1st row: Knit.

2nd row: Purl.

Continue in stocking st. for ¾ inch.

Next row: K2tog, K.5, K2tog.

Next row: P2tog, P.3, P2tog.

Next row: K2tog, K.1, K2tog, P3tog, fasten off.

To Make Up Pocket

Press lightly.

Place the two pieces together with a thin layer of cotton-wool or polyester batting between.

Join by crocheting 1 row of slip stitch, round edge, leaving opening for bill at
front of head.

Fold bill in half and sew edges together.

Place unshaped end into opening of head, and sew in place.

Work an eye in black thread.

Place pocket in position, and sew from tail round outer edge to top of head, leaving back open for pocket.

Using same wool as bill and long stitches sew on legs.

For toy use a larger quantity of cotton-wool or polyester toy stuffing.

Sew bill over a small piece of cardboard or template plastic before stitching into head.

Make a small cord and thread through lower edge of body for legs.
