Valma Baby Jumper/Sweater with Short Sleeves

Materials and Size

Patons Beehive Baby Wool – 19 inch underarm – 2 balls

Length from top of shoulder – 10 ins.

Length of sleeve from underarm – 2½ ins.

Knitting Needles, 1 pair each UK Nos 10/3.25mm/US3 and UK 12/2.75mm/US 2

Patens Crochet Hook, UK No 12/2.75mm/US C-2

Four Small Buttons.

Tension

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 8 stitches to the inch in width, measured over stocking stitch.

Pattern

The Front

Using smaller needles, cast on 74 stitches.

1st row: K1, * k1tbl, P1, rep from * to last st, K1tbl

Rep 1st row twenty-one times.

Using larger needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows three times.

** 9th row: K1, * K2, K2tog, yo, rep from * to last st, K1.

10th row: K1, P1, * yo, P2tog, P2, rep from * to last 4 sts, yo, P2tog, P1, K1.

11th row: K1, * K2tog, yo, K2, rep from * to last st, K1.

12th row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

13th row: K2, * yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K2, rep from * to end of row.

14th row: K1, * P2tog, yo, P2, rep from * to last st, K1.

15th row: K4, * yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K2, rep from * to last 2 sts, yo, slip 1, K1, psso

16th row: Like 12th row. **

Rep from 1st to 16th row twice, then 1st and 2nd rows twice.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: Cast off 3 sts, knit plain to end of row.

2nd row: Cast off 3 sts, purl to last st, K1.

3rd row: K2tog, knit plain to last 2 sts, K2tog

4th row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep from ** to ** once.

Work 12 rows in stocking stitch.***

25th row: K22, cast off 22 sts, K22.

Work 5 rows in stocking stitch on last 22 sts, dec once at neck edge in every row.

Work 2 rows without shaping.

Shape shoulder as follows:

1st row: K9, turn.

2nd row: Work to end of row.

Cast off.

Join in wool at neck edge, and work on remaining sts to correspond with other side.

The Back

Work exactly as given for Front to ***.

Work 8 rows in stocking stitch without shaping.

Shape shoulders as follows:

1st and 2nd rows: Work to last 9 sts, turn.

3rd and 4th rows: Work to last 17 sts, turn.

5th row: Work to end of row.

Cast off.

The Sleeves

Using smaller needles, cast on 46 stitches.

1st row: K1, * k1tbl, P1, rep from * to last st, k1tbl

Rep 1st row four times.

6th row: K1, * inc once in next st, P1, rep from * to last 5 sts, K1 tbl, (P1, K1 tbl), twice. (66 sts).

Using larger needles, work as given from ** to ** for Front twice, then from ** to 12th row once.

Continue working in patt, dec once at each end of needle in next row, then every alt row eight times.

Work 1 row without shaping. Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

The Neckband

Using a flat seam, sew up right shoulder seam.

With right side of work facing, and using smaller needles, knit up 88 sts evenly round neck.

1st row: K1, * K1tbl, P1, repeat from * to last st, k1tbl

Rep 1st row four times. Cast off in rib.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side and sleeve seams.

Sew up left shoulder seam for ¼ of an inch.

Using smaller needles, knit up 18 sts across back shoulder opening.

Work 4 rows in stocking stitch. Cast off.

Sew in sleeves, placing seams to side seams.

Using Crochet Hook, work 1 row of UK dc/US sc round shoulder opening, making 4 button loops on front shoulder.

Sew on buttons to correspond with loops. Finally, press all seams.
