Little girl's jumper/sweater with stranded scottie dogs

Materials

  • 3 ozs. of 3-ply baby wool in white;
  • a small ball of blue 3-ply wool;
  • 1 pr. each of old UK Nos. 11 and 12/US 3 and 2/metric 3mm and 2.75mm knitting needles;
  • 3 small buttons.

Measurements

Chest, 23 inches;

length from theshoulder, 12 inches;

sleeve seam, 8 inches.

Tension

8 stitches to 1 inch on larger needles.

W., white;

B., blue.

Pattern

Front

With white wool and smaller needles cast on 96 sts. Work in rib of K1, P1 for 2 ins.

Change to larger needles.

Knit 1 row.

Purl 1 row.

Join blue wool and commence design.

Break blue wool, continue in white.

Knit 1 row.

Purl 1 row.

Commence Pattern:

1st row: Knit.

2nd row: (K1, P1) repeat to end.

Repeat these 2 rows till front is 8½ inches long.

To Shape Armholes:

Cast off 6 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows.

K2 tog. at each end of every alt. row till 68 sts. remain.

Work straight till front is 10½ inches long.

To Shape Neck:

Next row: K.30, cast off 8 sts., K.30.

Work on these 30 sts.

K2 tog. at neck edge in each row till 22 sts. remain.

Work on these sts. till front is 12 inches long.

To Shape Shoulders:

Cast off 7 sts. twice at armhole edge.

Then cast off 8 sts.

Join wool on at front, and work other side of neck to correspond.

Back

Follow the instructions as for front, omitting coloured design.

2 inches of rib, 6½ inches of patt.

To Shape Armholes:

Cast off 6 sts. at the beg. of the next 2 rows.

Then K2 tog. each end of every alt. row till 68 sts.

Work straight till back is same length as front.

To Shape Shoulders:

Cast off 7 sts. at the beg. of the next 4 rows.

Then cast off 8 sts. at the beg. of the next 2 rows.

Cast off remaining sts.

Neckband

Join right shoulder seams.

With white wool and smaller needles pick up 76 sts. around neck, and work in K1, P1 rib for ½ inch.

Cast off.

Sleeves (both alike)

With white wool and smaller needles cast on 52 sts.

Work in rib for 2 inches.

Change to larger needles, and work in patt., inc. each end of every 6th row till sleeve is 8 inches long.

K2 tog. each end of every 2nd row till 50 sts.

Then K2 tog. each end of every row till 8 sts.

Cast off.

Front Bands (both alike)

With white wool and smaller needles cast on 108 sts.

Work 4 rows in rib of K1, P1.

Then knit 2 plain rows.

Cast off.

To Make Up

Press work on wrong side lightly.

Join side seams.

Join sleeve seams, and stitch to armhole.

Finish left shoulder with buttons and loops.

Stitch front bands, cast-on edge to front, commencing at neck of shoulder seam, stitch down front, curving to side seam, finishing lower edge of band above doggie design.
