Sally Baby Cardigan

Long sleeved baby cardigan with eyelet patterning and ribon closure

Materials and Size

Patons Beehive Fingering 3 ply

20-inch underarm – 3 balls

Length from top of shoulder – 10½ ins.

Length of sleeve from underarm – 6½ ins.

Knitting Needles, 1 pair UK No. 10/3.25mm/US 3

One Small Button.

Length of Narrow Ribbon.

Tension

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 8 stitches to the inch in width, measured over stocking stitch.

Pattern

The Left Front

Cast on 30 stitches.

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K3, pick up loop before next st and knit it tbl (this will now be termed “Increase” throughout) knit plain to end of row.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows twice.

** 7th row: K2, * yo, K2tog, K1, rep from * to last 4 sts, K4.

8th row: K3, “Increase”, * yo, K2tog, K1, rep from * to end of row.

9th row: K1, purl to last 3 sts, K3.

10th row: K3, “Increase”, purl to last st, K1.

11th row: Knit plain.

12th row: K3, “Increase”, knit plain to end of row. **

Rep. from ** to ** once, then from ** to 10th row once (41 sts).

Proceed as follows:

*** 1st and 2nd rows: Knit plain.

3rd row: K2, * yo, K2tog, K1, rep from * to last 3 sts, K3.

4th row: K5, * yo, K2tog, K1, rep from * to end of row.

5th row: K1, purl to last 3 sts, K3.

6th row: K3, purl to last st, K1. ***

Rep. from *** to *** until work measures 7½ ins. from commencement, ending with 6th row.

Keeping continuity of patt, cast off 4 sts at beg of next row, then dec once at beg of needle in every alt row until 34 sts remain.

Work 6 rows in patt. without shaping.

Continue working in stocking stitch, keeping a border of 3 sts in Garter Stitch at front edge until work measures 9½ ins. from commencement ending with a plain row.

Cast off 10 sts at beg of next row, then dec once at neck edge in every row until 16 sts remain.

Continue without shaping until work measures 10½ ins. from commencement.

Cast off.

The Right Front

Work to correspond with Left Front, working border and shapings at opposite ends of needle, making a buttonhole in 1st row of stocking stitch yoke.

To make buttonhole: K2, yo, K2tog, knit plain to end of row.

The Back

Cast on 80 stitches.

Work 6 rows in Garter Stitch.

Proceed as follows:

** 1st and 2nd rows: K2, * yo, K2tog, K1, rep from * to end of row.

3rd and 4th rows: K1, purl to last st, K1.

5th and 6th rows: Knit plain. **

Rep. from ** to ** until work measures same as Front to underarm.

Cast off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec once at each end of needle in next and every alt row until 66 sts remain.

Work 6 rows in patt without shaping.

Continue working in stocking stitch, until armholes measure same as Front armholes. Cast off.

The Sleeves

Cast on 44 stitches.

Work 6 rows in Garter Stitch.

Work as given from ** to ** for Back, twice, then from ** to 4th row once.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: Inc. once in first st, knit plain to last 2 sts, inc once in next st, K1.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Continue working in stocking stitch, inc once at each end of needle in 5th and every following 6th row until there are 58 sts. on needle.

Continue without shaping until work measures 6½ ins. from commencement.

Dec. once at each end of needle in every row until 14 sts remain. Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

The Neckband

Using a flat seam, sew up shoulder seams.

With right side of work facing, knit up 66 stitches evenly round neck.

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K5, * yo, K2tog, K4, rep from * to last 7 sts, yo, K2tog, K5.

Rep 1st row twice.

Cast off.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side and sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves placing seams to side seams.

Sew on button to correspond with buttonhole.

Thread ribbon through holes at neck. Finally, press all seams.
