Child's jumper with kangaroos. Free knitting pattern

Materials

  • 5 ozs. light, 1 oz. dark 3-ply fingering wool;
  • 1 pr. each Old UK Nos. 10 and 12/US 3 and 2/metric 3.25 and 2.75mm needles;

Measurements

Length from top of shoulder, 15 inches;

width around underarm, 26 inches;

length of sleeve from underarm, 10½ inches with cuff turned back.

Tension

7½ stitches to 1 inch.

L., light wool;

D., dark wool.

Pattern

Front

Using light wool and smaller needles cast on 90 sts. Work in rib of K.1, P.1 for 2½ inches.

Change to larger needles.

Work in intarsia knitting.

Continue in stocking st. till work measures 10 inches from commencement, ending with a purl row.

Cast off 4 sts. at beginning of next 2 rows, then dec. once at each end of needle in next and every alt. row till 76
sts. remain.

Work 31 rows in stocking st.

To Shape Neck:

1st row: K.30, turn.

Continue on these 30 sts., dec. at neck edge in every row till 22 sts. remain.

Work 2 rows without shaping.

To Shape Shoulder:

1st row: Work to last 8 sts., turn.

2nd row: Work to end.

3rd row: Work to last 14 sts., turn.

4th row: Work to end. Cast off.

Place centre 16 sts. on spare needle, and work remaining 30 sts. to correspond with left side.

Back

Using smaller needles and light wool cast on 90 sts.

Work in rib of K.1, P.1 for 2½ inches.

Change to larger needles.

1st row: Knit.

2nd row: Purl dark wool.

3rd row: Knit dark wool.

4th row: Purl light wool.

5th row: Knit light wool.

Repeat 4th and 5th rows till work measures same as front to armhole, ending with row 4.

To Shape Armhole:

Cast off 4 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows, then dec. once each end of needle in next and every alt. row till 76 sts. remain.

Continue without shaping till work measures same as front at armhole edge.

To Shape Shoulder:

1st and 2nd rows: Work to last 8 sts., turn.

3rd and 4th rows: Work to last 14 sts., turn.

5th row: Work to end . Cast off.

Sleeves (both alike)

Using light wool and smaller needles cast on 50 sts.

Work in rib of K.1, P.1 for 4 inches.

Change to larger needles, and work in stocking st., inc. once each end of needle in next and every following 6th row till there are 64 sts on needle.

Work without shaping till work measures 12 inches from commencement.

Dec. once at each end of needle in next and every alt. row till 44 sts. remain, then every row till 20 sts. remain. Cast off.

Neckband

Sew up left shoulder using light wool and smaller needles.

Knit up 40 sts. along back, 24 sts. along left front, (K.1, P.1) 8 times across spare needle, knit up 24 sts. along right front.

Work 10 rows in rib of K.1, P.1. Cast off in rib.

To Make Up

Press lightly. Sew up shoulder, side and sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves.
