Goosie Gander Baby Jumper/Sweater

Goosie gander short sleeved top for toddlers

Materials

  • 2 ozs. of green and 1 oz. of white 3-ply crepe wool;
  • 1 pr. each of old UK Nos. 10 and 12/US 3 and 2/metric 2.75 and 3.25mm needles;
  • 1 crochet hook;
  • 4 buttons.

Measurements

To fit 18 inch chest;

length from top of shoulder, 10½inches;

length at underarm, 1½ inches.

Special Abbreviations

G., green;

W., white.

Tension

7½ stitches to 1 inch.

Pattern

Back

** Using smaller needles and green wool cast on 72 sts.
Work in rib of K1, P1 for 16 rows.

Change to larger needles. Work 4 rows stocking st.

1st Pattern

In words (chart follows)

1st row: K.2 W., 1 G., * 3 W., 1 G., repeat from * to last st., 1 W.

2nd row: * P.3 W, 1 G., repeat from * to end.

3rd row: Knit same as 1st row.

4th row: Purl green.

Chart

Now work 14 rows from chart, repeating the 12 sts. 6 times.

Then continue in stocking st. and green wool till work measures 6½ inches from commencement.

To Shape Armhole:

Cast off 6 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows.

Then dec. once at each end of next and every alt. row till 56 sts. remain.

Purl 1 row.

Repeat 1st to 4th rows once.

Work 2 rows stocking st. G.

Change to white wool.

Work 3 rows in stocking st.

2nd Pattern

In words (chart follows)

1st row: P.1 G., 1 W., * 3 G., 1 W., repeat from * to last 2 sts., 2 G.

2nd row: * K.1 W., 3 G., repeat from * to end.

3rd row: Purl same as 1st row. **

Chart

Chart for chain in stranded knitting

Work in stocking st., using white wool till work measures 10½ inches from commencement.

Cast off.

Front

Work as given from ** to ** for back.

Then work in stocking st. with white wool for 8 rows.

To Shape Neck:

K.18, cast off 20, K.18.

Continue on last 18 sts. till work measures same as the back.

Cast off.

Join in wool at neck edge, and work other side to correspond.

Sleeves (both alike)

Using smaller needles and green wool cast on 40 sts. Work in rib of K1, P1 for 12 rows.

Next row: K.10, (inc. once m next st.) 20 times, K.10 (60 sts.).

Change to larger needles.

1st row: Purl.

2nd row: Knit.

3rd row: Purl.

Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows twice.

To Shape Top:

Cast off 6 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows.

Dec. once each encl of needle in next 2 rows.

Repeat 1st to 4th patt. rows as given for lower edge of jumper.

Using green wool work 2 rows stocking st., dec. once each end of needle in every row.

Change to white wool.

Work 3 rows stocking st., dec. once at each end of needle in 2nd and 3rd rows.

Then repeat 2nd patt. 1st to 3rd rows once.

Continue in white, dec. once each end of needle in next 8 rows.

Then K2tog across row.

Cast off.

To Make Up

Press lightly.

Sew up shoulders ½ inch from armhole.

Sew in sleeves. Sew up side and sleeve seams.

Using crochet hook work 1 row of d.c. (US single crochet) round neck and shoulder openings.

Make 2 loops on each shoulder. Sew on buttons.
