Goldie Sweater/Jumper

Baby cardigan with purl eyelet patterning

Materials

Patons Nimbla Knitting Wool: Size A – 17-18 inch underarm – 2 balls, Size B – 19-20 inch underarm – 2 balls

Length from top of shoulder – Size A – 9½ ins. Size B – 10 ins.

Length of sleeve seam – Size A – 6 ins. Size B – 7 ins. (or length desired).

Patons Beehive Knitting Needles, 1 pair each UK Nos. 11/3mm/US 2 and 13/2.25mm/US 1

Medium Crochet Hook.

Six Small Buttons.

Tension

9 stitches to the inch in width, measured over plain smooth fabric.

Instructions are for smaller size A. Larger size B is shown thus [B-…].

Pattern

The Front

Using No. 13 Needles, cast on 72 [B-82] stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row twenty-three times, inc. once at end of needle in last row.

Using No. 11 Needles, proceed as follows:

** 1st row: Knit.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows twice.

7th row: P1, * yo, P2tog, rep. from * to end of row.

8th row: K1, * yo, K2tog, rep. from * to end of row. **

Rep. from ** to ** seven [B-seven] times.

Cast off 5 [B-6] sts at beg. of next 2 rows, then 2 sts at beg. of following 2 rows.

Work 24 [B-30] rows in patt. without shaping.

Next row: Work 19 [B-21] sts in patt., cast off 21 [B-25] sts loosely, work in patt. to end of row.

Continue in patt. on last 19 [B-21] sts, dec. once at neck edge in every row until 16 [B-18] sts remain.

Work 2 rows in patt. without shaping.

Shape shoulder as follows:

1st row: Work to last 8 [B-9] sts, turn.

2nd row: Work to end of row. Cast off.

Join in wool at neck edge and work on remaining sts to correspond with other side.

The Back

Work exactly as given for Front until armhole shapings have been completed.

Continue in patt. without shaping until armholes measure same as Front armholes.

Shape shoulders as follows:

1st and 2nd rows: Work to last 8 [B-9] sts, turn.

3rd and 4th rows: Work to last 16 [B-18] sts, turn.

5th row: Work to end of row. Cast off.

The Sleeves

Using No. 13 Needles, cast on 46 [B-50] stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row fifteen times, inc. once at end of needle in last row.

Using No. 11 Needles, proceed as follows:

Work in patt. as given from ** to ** for Front, inc. once at each end of needle in 5th row and every following 6th row until there are 63 [B-67] sts on needle.

Continue in patt. without shaping until side edge measures 6 [B-7] ins. (or length desired) from commencement.

Keeping continuity of patt. dec. once at each end of needle in every row until 25 [B-27] sts remain. Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

The Front Neckband

With right side of work facing and using No. 13 Needles, knit up 46 [B-50] sts evenly round front of neck.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row eight times. Cast off loosely in rib.

The Back Neckband

With right side of work facing and Using No. 13 Needles, knit up 38 [B-42] sts evenly across back of neck.

Work as given for Front Neckband.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side and sleeve seams.

Sew up shoulder seams for ½ inch.

Sew in sleeves, placing seams to side seams.

With right side of work facing and using No. 13 Needles, knit up 18 sts along back of shoulder opening.

Work 4 rows in Garter Stitch. Cast off.

Work other underlap in same manner.

Using Crochet Hook, work 1 row of dc (US single crochet) along shoulder opening, making 3 button loops on each front shoulder.

Sew on buttons to correspond with loops. Finally, press all seams.
