Materials and Size

Patons Beehive Baby Wool – 2ozs.

19-20 inch underarm

Length from top of shoulder – 9½ ins.

Length of sleeve from underarm 7 ins.

1 pair UK No 10/3.25mm/US 3 knitting needles

UK No 12/2.75mm/US C-2

Four Small Buttons.

Tension

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 8 stitches to the inch in width.

Pattern

NOTE: This cardigan is worked in one piece to armholes.

This pattern uses UK crochet terms. UK double crochet = US single crochet

Cast on 176 stitches.

1st row: k3, * p2, k2, rep from * to last st, K1.

2nd row: k1, * p2, k2, rep from * to last 3 sts, p2, K1.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows once.

5th row: k1, cast off 2 sts (p2, k2) five times, p2, cast off 2 sts, rib to end of row.

6th row: Rib 149, cast on 2 sts, rib 22, cast on 2 sts, k1.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows six times, 5th and 6th rows once, then 1st and 2nd rows once.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Continue in plain, smooth fabric, decrease once at each end of needle in 3rd row and every alternate row until 146 sts remain.

Work 2 rows without shaping.

In next row: K1, p31, cast off 6 sts, p70, cast off 6 sts, p31, K1.

The Right Front

Continue on last 32 sts, dec once at each end of needle in next and every alternate row until 26 sts remain.

Continue decreasing at front edge only in every alt row until 23 sts remain.

Work 1 row without shaping.

Proceed as follows:

** 1st row: k5, yo, slip 1, k2tog, psso, yo, k7, yo, slip 1, k2tog, psso, yo, K5.

2nd and alt rows: k1, purl to last st K1.

3rd row: k2tog, (k3, yo) twice, k2, slip 1, k2tog, psso, k2, (yo, k3) twice, k2tog

5th row: k2tog, k2, yo, K5, yo, K1, slip 1, k2tog, psso, K1, yo, k5, yo, k2, k2tog

7th row: k2tog, K1, yo, k7, yo , slip 1, k2tog, psso, yo, k7, yo, K1, k2tog

9th row: k3 (yo, k2, slip 1, k2tog, psso, k2, yo, k3) twice.

11th row: k4, yo, K1, slip 1, k2tog, psso, K1, yo, k5, yo, K1, slip 1, k2tog, psso, K1, yo, k4.

12th row: Like 2nd row. **

Cast off.

The Back

With right side of work facing, join in wool and work in plain, smooth fabric on next 70 sts, dec. once at each end of the row in next and every alt row until 64 sts remain.

Work 7 rows without shaping, dec once at end of needle in last row (63 sts).

Proceed as follows:

*** 1st row: k5, *yo, slip 1, k2tog, psso, yo, k7, rep from * to last 8 sts, yo, slip 1, k2tog, psso, yo, k5.

2nd and alt rows: k1, purl to last st K1.

3rd row: k2tog, k3, * yo, k3, yo, k2, slip 1, k2tog, psso, k2, rep from * to last 8 sts (yo, k3) twice, k2tog

5th row: k2tog, k2, * yo, k5, yo, K1, slip 1, k2tog, psso, K1, rep from * to last 9 sts, yo, k5, yo, k2, k2tog

Repeat from *** to *** once, then from *** to 6th row once. Cast off.

The Left Front

With right side of work facing, join wool to remaining 32 sts and work to correspond with Right Front, working shapings at opposite ends of needle.

The Sleeves

Cast on 44 stitches.

1st row: k3, * p2, k2, rep from * to last st, K1.

2nd row: k1, * p2, k2, rep from * to last 3 sts, p2, K1.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows seven times.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: k1, purl to last st, K1.

Continue in plain, smooth fabric increase once at each end of row in 5th row and every following 6th row until there are 60 sts on needle.

Continue in plain, smooth fabric until side edge measures 7 ins. from commencement.

Cast off 2 sts at beg of every row until 16 sts remain.

Cast off.

Work another sleeve in same manner.

To Make Up Cardigan

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam throughout, sew up shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves.

Using crochet hook, work 1 row of dc along both front edges and across back of neck, being careful to keep work even, turn, with 1 ch.

In next row: 1 dc into 1st dc, * 3 ch, 1 dc into 1st dc (to make picot) miss 1dc, 1dc into next dc, rep from * to end of row.

Fasten off.

Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Finally, press all seams.
