Two Stitch Holders
Ten [B-Eleven] Small Buttons.
Tension
8 stitches to the inch in width, measured over plain smooth fabric on larger needles
Pattern
Instructions are for smaller size A. Larger size B, is shown thus [B-… ].
The Left Front
Using smaller Needles, cast on 40 [B-46] stitches.
1st row: * K1, P1, rep from * to last 2 sts, K2.
Rep 1st row seventeen times. A. only inc. once at end of needle in last row. (41 [B-46] sts).
Using larger size needles, proceed as follows:
** 1st row: K2, * P1, K3, P3, K3, rep from * to last 9 [B-14] sts
A only: P1, (K1, P1) three times, K2
[B only: P1, K3, P2, (K1, P1) three times, K2].
2nd row: A only: (K1, P1) four times, K2, P3
[B only: (K1, P1) four times], * K1, P3, K3, P3, rep from * to last 8 sts, K1, P3, K3, P1.
3rd row: * P5, K5, rep from * to last 11 [B-16] sts
A only: P3, (K1, P1) three times, K2
[B only: P5, K3, (K1, P1) three times, K2l.
4th row: A only: (K1, P1) four times, P3.
[B only: (K1, P1) four times, K3, P5], * K5, P5, rep from * to end of row. **
Rep from ** to ** nine [B-eleven] times.
Keeping continuity of patt, cast on 2 sts at beg of next row and every alt row four times, then cast on 5 sts at beg of every alt row four [B-six] times. (71 [B-86] sts).
Work 29 [B-29] rows without shaping.
Shape shoulder and neck as follows:
1st row: Cast off 15 [B-20] sts, work to last 10 sts, work 2 tog, turn, leave remaining sts on a stitch holder.
2nd and alt rows: Work 2 tog, work to end of row.
3rd row: Cast off 15 [B-20] sts, work to last 2 sts, work 2 tog.
5th row: Cast off 8 [B-10] sts, work to last 2 sts, work 2 tog.
7th row: Cast off 8 [B-10] sts, work to last 2 sts, work 2 tog.
8th row: As 2nd row. Cast off.
The Right Front
Using smaller size needles, cast on 40 [B-46] stitches.
1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.
Rep 1st row once.
3rd row: K2, P1, K1, yo, K2tog, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.
Rep 1st row eleven times.
Rep 3rd row once.
Rep 1st row three times,
A only: increase once at beg of needle in last row. (41 [B-46] sts).
Using larger size needles, proceed as follows:
** 1st row: A only K2, (P1, K1) three times, P1
[B only: K2, (P1, K1) three times, P2, K3, P1], * K3, P3, K3, P1, rep from * to last 2 sts, K2.
2nd row: P1, K3, P3, K1, * P3, K3, P3, K1, rep from * to last 13 [B-8] sts
A only: P3, K2, (P1, K1,) four times
[B only: (P1, K1) four times].
3rd row: A only: K2, (P1, K1) three times, P3
[B only: K2, (P1, K1) three times, K3, P5], * K5, P5, rep from * to end of row.
4th row: * P5, K5, rep from * to last 11 [B-16] sts A. only: P3, (P1, K1) four times [8. only: P5, K3, (P1, K1) four times]. **
Keeping continuity of patt as given from ** to **, work to correspond with Left Front, working shapings at opposite ends of needle and making a buttonhole as before in every 12th row from previous buttonhole. (9 [B-10] buttonholes in all.)
The Back
Using smaller needles, cast on 74 [B-84] stitches.
1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.
Rep 1st row seventeen times, inc. once at end of needle in last row. (75 [B-85] sts).
Using larger size needles proceed as follows:
** 1st row: K2, * P1, K3, P3, K3, rep from * to last 3 sts, P1, K2.
2nd row: P1, * K3, P3, K1, P3, rep from * to last 4 sts, K3, P1.
3rd row: * P5, K5, rep from * to last 5 sts, P5.
4th row: As 3rd row. ** Rep from ** to ** nine [B-eleven] times.
Cast on 2 sts at beg of next 10 rows, then 5 sts at beg of next 8 [B-12] rows. (135 [B-165] sts).
Work 28 [B-28] rows without shaping.
Cast off 15 [B-20] sts at beg of next 4 rows, then 8 [B-10] sts at beg. of next 6 rows.
Cast off remaining sts
The Neckband
Using a flat seam, sew up shoulder and top sleeve seams.
With right side of work facing, slip the 8 sts from Right Front stitch holder on to a smaller size needle and using same needle, knit up 59 sts evenly round neck, then work in rib across 8 sts from Left Front stitch holder. (75 sts).
1st row: * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.
2nd row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to last st, K1.
3rd row: As 1st row.
4th row: K2, P1, K1, yo, K2tog, * P1, K1, rep from * to last st, K1.
Rep 1st and 2nd rows once, then 1st row once. Cast off loosely in rib.
The Cuffs
With right side of work facing and using smaller size needles, knit up 52 [B-52] sts, evenly along lower edge of sleeve.
1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.
Rep 1st row twelve times.
Cast off loosely in rib.
Work other Cuff in same manner.
To Make Up
With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.
Using a flat seam, sew up side and sleeve seams.
Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Finally, press all seams.
