Materials, Gauge and Size
1 pair of 3mm (US size 2 or 3) straight needles
1 pair of 2mm (US size 0) straight needles
Fine fingering or sock weight (Aus 3 ply weight) wool
Gauge and size
At a gauge of 3½ ribs per inch, the mitten measures 1 7/8 inch/4.75cm across and 3 inches/7½cm from wrist to fingertips.

Using 3mm (US 2 or 3) needles, cast on 57sts
Rows 1-14: *Yo, slip 1 as if to purl, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the row
Change to 2mm (US size 0) needles and work four more rows in the same manner as row 1.
Row 19: *K1, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the row (38sts)
Row 20: K1, *yo, k2tog; repeat from * to the last st, k1
Row 21: Knit
Rows 22-29: * K1, p1; repeat from * to the end of the row
Change back to larger needles
Row 30: *yo, slip 1 purlways, k1; repeat from * to the end of the row (57sts)
Rows 31-37: *Yo, slip 1 purlways, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the row
Thumb
Right hand mitten
Row 38: (yo, slip 1 purlways, k2tog) 6 times turn and continue on these 18sts for the thumb
Next 13 rows: (yo, slip 1 purlways, k2tog) 6 times
Row 52: Still working on the 18sts, *K1, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the row
Row 53: K2tog across the row. Cut the yarn, thread through the remaining stitches, pull tight and fasten off.
Rejoin yarn to the body of the mittens and complete the row.

Left hand mitten
For the left hand mitten, work the body of the mitten across the first 39sts, then work the thumb afterwards on the remaining 18 sts.
Finishing
Fold and sew across the end of the body of the mitten and down the side (joining to the side of the thumb at rows 38 and below).
Sew the side seam of the thumb.
A fine ribbon may be threaded through the yarn overs at the waist of the mitten in row 20 if desired.
