Button-me-up Double Breasted Cardigan

Button-me-up double breasted cardigan for toddlers. Free knitting pattern.

Materials

  • 6 ozs. 3-ply crochet wool;
  • 1 pr. each of Old UK Nos. 10 and  13/US 3 and 1/metric 3.25 and 2.25mm needles;
  • 4 buttons.

Tension

7½ stitches and 10 rows to 1 inch.

Measurements

Chest, 22 inches;

length, 14½ inches;

sleeve seam, 11½ inches.

Pattern

Left Front

Using smaller needles cast on 58 sts.  Work in K1, P1 rib for 14 rows.

15th row: (Wrong side of work) Make 2 buttonholes as follows: Rib 5, cast off 4, rib 14, cast off 4,  rib to end.

16th row: Work in rib, casting on 4 sts into cast off  space;.

Work a further 13 rows in rib.

Using a short length of wool cast on 30 sts on a spare larger sized needle for facing. Put this aside.

Change to larger needles.

Next row: Knit to end, then knit the 30 sts. on  spare needle for facing (88 sts).

Working in stocking st. for 14 rows, inc. 1 st. at the  beg. of the 6th and 14th rows, armhole edge (90 sts).

Next row: P3, cast off 4, P14, cast off 4, P10,  cast off 4, P14, cast off 4, purl to end.

Next row: Knit, casting on 4 sts. into cast-off spaces.

Continue in stocking st., shaping for side by inc. 1 st. at the beg. of the 6th and every 8th row following till there are 94 sts., at same time making a buttonhole  as before in 23rd and 24th rows.

Then work 27 rows.

To Shape Armhole:

** Cast off 6 sts. at the beg. of next row.

Then dec. 1 st. at armhole end in the next 6 rows  (82 sts). **

Next row: P30 (leave on a spare needle for facing),  purl to end of row.

Continue on these 52 sts. as follows:

1st, 5th, 9th, 13th, 17th, 21st, 25th, 29th and  33rd rows: Knit to last 2 sts., K2tog.

2nd and alt. rows: Purl.

3rd row: K22, K2tog, knit to last 2 sts., K2tog

7th row: K21, K2tog, knit to last 2 sts., K2tog

11th row: K20, K2tog, knit to last 2 sts., K2tog

15th row: K19, K2tog, knit to last 2 sts., K2tog

19th row: K18, K2tog, knit to last 2 sts., K2tog

23rd row: K17, K2tog, knit to last 2 sts., K2tog

27th row: K16, K2tog, knit to last 2 sts., K2tog

31st row: K15, K2tog, knit to last 2 sts., K2tog

35th row: K14, K2tog, knit to end.

Work 3 rows stocking st.

39th row: K13, K2tog, knit to end.

Work 3 rows stocking st.

43rd row: K12, K2tog, knit to end (24 sts).

44th row: Purl.

To Shape Shoulder:

*** Cast off 12 sts. at the beg. of next row.

Work back.

Cast off remaining 12 sts. ***

Continue facing as follows:

Right side of work facing, join wool to 30 sts. on  spare needle, knit to end.

Continue in stocking st., dec. 1 st. at neck edge in every alt. row till 12 sts. remain.

Continue straight till facing measures same as front  to shoulder.

Cast off.

Right Front

Using smaller needles cast on 58 sts. Work in K1, P1 rib for 29 rows.

Change to larger needles.

Next row: Cast on 30 sts. for facing, knit to end  (88 sts).

Work in stocking st., inc. 1 st. at the end (for side  shaping) in the 6th and every 8th rows following till  there are 94 sts.

Work 28 rows.

To Shape Armhole:

Repeat from ** to ** as for left front.

Knit 1 row.

Next row: P52, leave last 30 sts. on a spare needle  for facing.

Continue on 52 sts. remaining as follows:

1st, 5th, 9th, 13th, 17th, 21st, 25th, 29th and  33rd rows: K2tog, knit to end.

2nd and alt. rows: Purl.

3rd row: K2tog, knit to last 24 sts., slip 1, k1, psso, knit to end.

7th row: K2tog, knit to last 23 sts., slip 1, k1, psso, knit to end.

11th row: K2tog, knit to last 22 sts., slip 1, k1, psso, knit to end.

15th row: K2tog, knit to last 21 sts., slip 1, k1, psso, knit to end.

19th row: K2tog, knit to last 20 sts., slip 1, k1, psso, knit to end.

23rd row: K2tog, knit to last 19 sts., slip 1, k1, psso, knit to end.

27th row: K2tog, knit to last 18 sts., slip 1, k1, psso, knit to end.

31st row: K2tog, knit to last 17 sts., slip 1, k1, psso, knit to end.

35th row: Knit to last 16 sts., slip 1, k1, psso,  knit to end.

Work 3 rows stocking st.

39th row: Knit to last 15 sts., slip 1, k1, psso,  knit to end.

Work 3 rows stocking st.

43rd row: Knit to last 14 sts., slip 1, k1, psso,  knit to end ( 24 sts).

To Shape Shoulder:

Repeat from *** to *** as given for left front.

Facing continued:

Wrong side of work facing, join in wool to inside of  30 sts. on spare needle, and work in stocking st., dec.

1 st. at neck end on every alt. row till 12 sts. remain.

Continue straight till facing measures same as front  to shoulder.

Cast off.

Back

Using smaller needles cast on 84 sts.  Work in K1, P1 rib for 29 rows.

Change to larger needles.  Work in stocking st., inc. 1 st. at each end in the  7th and every 8th row following till there are 96 sts.

Continue without further shaping till work measures  same as fronts to armhole.

To Shape Armhole:

Cast off 6 sts. at the beg. of next 2 rows.

Then dec. 1 st. at each end in every row till 74  sts. remain.

Continue straight till work measures same as front  to shoulder.

To Shape Shoulder:

Cast off 12 sts. at the beg. of the next 4 rows.

Cast off the remaining sts.

Sleeves (both alike)

Using smaller needles cast on 52 sts.  Work in K1, P1 rib for 2 inches.

Change to larger needles.  Work in stocking st., inc. 1 st. at each end in the  5th and every 8th row following till there are 72 sts.

Continue without further shaping till work measures  11½ inches from. commencement or length desired.

To Shape Top:

Cast off 4 sts. at the beg. of the next 2 rows.

Then dec. 1 st. at each end in every alt. row till  24 sts. remain.

Cast off.

Collar

Using larger needles cast on 4 sts.  Commencing with a purl row work in stocking st.,  inc. 1 st. at each end in every knit row till there  are 40 sts.

lnc. 1 st. at each end in every 4th row following till  there are 50 sts.

Work straight for 33 rows.

Dec. 1 st. at each end in the next and every 4th row  following till 40 sts. remain.

Then in every alt. row till 4 sts. remain.

Purl 1 row.

Cast off.

To Make Up

Press lightly.

Join side, shoulder and sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves.

Fold collar in half and attach to  neck.

Sew facings in position.

Press seams and  facings, stretching outer edge of collar slightly.

Sew  on buttons.
