Toddler sweater or jumper with horses on the front in coloured knitting

Materials

  • 5 ozs. yellow,
  • 1 oz. brown 4-ply fingering;
  • 1 pr. each Old UK Nos. 10 and 12/US 3 and 2/metric 3.25 and 2.75mm needles;
  • Two buttons

Measurements

Length from top of shoulder, 14 inches;

width all round underarm, 25 inches;

length of sleeve from underarm, 10 inches (with cuff turned back).

Tension

7½ stitches to 1 inch.

Abbreviations

Y., yellow;

B., brown.

Pattern

Front

Using yellow wool and smaller needles cast on 82 sts.

Work in rib of K.1, P.1 for 2½ inches, inc. once at end of last row (83 sts).

Change to larger needles.

1st row: Knit.

2nd row: Purl.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows till work measures 9 inches from commencement.

To Shape Armhole:

Cast off 4 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows.

To Shape Neck:

Using yellow knit 28, turn; continue working on these 28 sts. in stocking st., dec. one st at neck edge in every alt. row till 18 sts. remain.

To Shape Shoulder:

1st row: Work to last 8 sts., turn.

2nd row: Work to end. Cast off.

Place centre 15 sts. on spare needle, and work on remaining 28 sts. to correspond with left side.

Back

Work exactly as given for front till armhole shaping is reached.

To Shape Armhole:

Cast off 4 sts. at beginning of next 2 rows, then dec. once each end of needle in next and following alt. row till 71 sts. remain.

Continue in stocking st. till work measures same as front at armhole edge.

To Shape Shoulder:

1st and 2nd rows: Work to last 8 sts., turn.

3rd row: Work to end. Cast off.

Sleeves (both alike)

Using yellow wool and smaller needles cast on 48 sts.

Work in rib of K.1, P.1 for 3 inches.

Change to larger needles, and work in stocking st., inc. once each end of needle in 1st and every following 6th row till there are 62 sts. on needle.

Work without shaping till work measures 11 inches from commencement, then dec. once each end of needle in every row till 12 sts. remain. Cast off.

Neckband

Sew up left shoulder.

Using smaller needles, with right side facing, pick up 40 sts. across back,

24 sts. along left front,

K.1, (P.1, K.1) 7 times across sts. on spare needle, pick up 23 sts. on right front.

Work 10 rows in rib. Cast off.

To Make Up

Press lightly. Sew in sleeves, then sew up side and sleeve seams .

Make two loops on shoulder. Sew on buttons
