Knitted Rug and Cushion

Materials

Patons Fireside Fingering, 4 ply (amounts as shown below)
1 pair Old UK size 9 needles.

Rug: 72 x 72 inches
Red: 1 lb, 4 ounces
Blue: 14 ounces
Yellow: 1 lb

Rug: 54 x 54 inches
Red: 1 lb, 1 ounce
Blue: 9 ounces
Yellow: 8 ounces

Cushion: 18 x 18 inches
Red: 4 ounces
Blue: 2 ounces
Yellow: 2 ounces

Tension

28 sts to 4 inches

Pattern

Rug: 72 x 72 inches

[A] Cast on 100 stitches, work in garter stitch throughout.
Knit in stripes as follows, decreasing 1 stitch at the beginning of every alternate row:
10 rows red
10 rows yellow
2 rows red
10 rows blue
10 rows red
2 rows yellow
2 rows blue
10 rows red
10 rows yellow
2 rows red
10 rows blue
10 rows red
2 rows yellow
2 rows blue
Continue working stripe sequence until 1 stitch remains, fasten off.
Make another 7 pieces the same

[A1]
Cast on 100 stitches and work in the same manner as [A], but decreasing 1 stitch at the end of every alternate row.
Make another 7 pieces the same

[B]
Cast on 200 stitches and work in stripes as before, omitting the decreases.

Make another 3 pieces the same.

To Make Up Rug

With a slightly damp cloth and a warm iron, press lightly. Sew pieces together as illustrated in the diagram below. Using a crochet hook, work 1 row of double crochet around edges.

To Make Rug 54 x 54 Inches

Work 4 pieces of [A] and 4 pieces of [A1] as given for 72 inch rug.

Cast on 53 stitches and work as given for [A]
Make another 3 pieces the same

Cast on 53 stitches and work as for [A1]
Make another 3 pieces the same

Cast on 100 stitches and work as given for [B]
Make another 3 pieces the same.

To Make Up Rug

Make up as given for larger rug, but using the smaller [A] and [A1] pieces for the centre.

To Make Cushion

Work 2 pieces as given for [A]
Work 2 pieces as given for [A1]

To Make Up Cushion

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron press lightly. Sew 2 diagonal sides together. Join other 2 diagonal sides together in the same manner. Using a crochet hook, join pieces together by working 2 rows of double crochet around 3 sides. Insert cushion and close with 2 rows of double crochet.
