Square Dance Potholder

Double thickness potholder with coloured square design

This pattern uses American crochet terms. US single crochet = UK double crochet. US double crochet = UK treble and so on

Materials

J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen or other size 10 pearl/perle cotton, 1 ball each of a light and dark color.

Steel Crochet Hook US No 6 or 7/1.65 or 1.8mm

This amount is sufficient for 3 potholders, if colors are reversed.

Pattern

Front

Starting at one end, with light color, ch 65 (to measure 7 inches).

1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook, and in each ch across (63 dc, counting turning ch). Ch 3, turn.

2nd row: Holding dark color along top of previous row and working over it to conceal it, with light color, make dc in next 2 dc, leaving the last 2 loops of last dc on hook. Drop light color, pick up dark color and draw through last 2 loops, thus changing color in last dc of light color-group.

With dark color, make dc in 12 dc, carrying light color concealed in dc’s and changing color in last dc as before.

Make 3 light dc and 12 dark dc alternately 3 more times. Drop dark color and with light color, work dc in next 2 dc and in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn.

3rd row: Dc in next 2 dc, changing color as before; then work 12 dark and 3 light dc alternately across.
Ch 3, turn.

4th, 5th and 6th rows: Same as 3rd row.

7th row: With light color, work dc in each dc across, concealing dark color as before.

Repeat the last 6 rows for pattern 3 more times. Fasten off.

Back

Starting at one end, with light color ch 65 (to measure 7 inches).

1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook, and in each ch across (63 dc, counting turning ch). Ch 3, turn.

2nd row: Dc in each dc across. Ch 3, turn.

Repeat the 2nd row 23 more times. Do not fasten off.

PAD – Cut flannel, muslin or any soft material, slightly smaller than crocheted pieces. Place between crochet, tacking to wrong side of one piece.

Place padding between the 2 crocheted pieces and, working along top of potholder, through both thicknesses, work 2 sc in corner, * ch 3, sc in last sc, sc in next 3 sts. Repeat from * across, making 3 sc in corner. Work along other 3 sides in same manner. Join and fasten off.

Sew on a bone ring.
