This pattern uses American crochet terms. US single crochet = UK double crochet. US double crochet = UK treble and so on
Materials
American Thread Company “Star” Pearl Cotton, article 90, size 5, 2- 50 yd . Balls Black. 4-50 yd. Balls Red and
“Star” Six Strand Mercerized Embroidery Cotton, article 50, 1- 8 yd. Skein each Black, Blue, Green and Yellow.
Steel Crochet Hook US No 6/1.6mm
Pattern
Potholder is worked with double strand of thread.
With Black, ch 63 and work 62 sc on ch, ch 1 to turn all rows.
2nd Row: 1 sc in each sc.
3rd Row: Working in sc, decrease 1 st at end of row (to decrease: insert needle in st, pull loop through, insert needle in next st, pull loop through, thread over and work off all loops at one time).
4th Row: Decrease 1 st at beginning of row.
5th Row: Work even, break Black.
6th Row: Attach Red, 1 sc in each sc.
7th Row: Same as 3rd row, then work 1 row even.
Repeat the last 2 rows once
11th Row: Work even.
12th Row: Decrease 1 st at beginning and end of row.
Work 1 row even.
14th Row: Decrease 1st at end row.
Work 1 row even.
16th Row: Same as 12th row.
Work 1 row even.
Repeat the last 2 rows once.
20th to 28th Rows: Same as 12th row.
29th to 31st Rows: Decrease 2 sts at the beginning and end of each row, break thread.
Work a row of sc around entire section working Red over Red and Black over Black.
Work another section in same manner.
Tab
With Black, ch 6 and work 5 sc on ch, ch 1 to turn all rows.
2nd Row: 1 sc in each sc.
Repeat the 2nd row 10 times.
13th Row: Decrease 1 st at end of row.
14th Row: Decrease 1 st at beginning of row.
Repeat the last 2 rows until 1 st remains, break thread.
Work another tab in same manner.
With “Star” Six Strand Mercerized Embroidery Cotton, embroider plaid in outline St.
Working from left to right, with Blue, embroider over the 4th sc of 1st Red row, over the next sc of 2nd Red Row, then over the next sc of 3rd Red row, continue in same manner to top of section, * skip next sc of 1st row of Red and embroider a Black stripe in same manner, skip next sc, embroider a Yellow stripe, skip 9 sc, 1 Blue stripe, skip 1 sc, 1 Black stripe, skip 1 sc, 1 Green stripe, skip 9 sc, 1 Blue stripe, repeat from * across row ending with a Green stripe.
Working from right to left, starting at the 5th sc from the end of the 1st row of Red, embroider * 1 Yellow stripe, skip 1 sc, 1 Black stripe, skip 1 sc, 1 Green stripe, skip 9 sc, 1 Blue stripe, skip 1 sc, 1 Black stripe, skip 1 sc, 1 Yellow stripe, skip 9 sc, repeat from * across row.
With Red, cover a bone ring with sc and attach to back of potholder at top.
