Pattern

Large Mat

Make 18 sc closely in each of 4 rings, covering only half of each ring; make 36 sc in next ring. Join with sl st to 1st sc made on this ring.

Working over other half of each ring, make 18 sc in each of remaining 4 rings, joining with sl st to 1st sc of each ring.

Now working over cord, make (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) 6 times.  * Make 8 sc over cord only, skip 5 sc of this ring and 5 of next,  sc in next 8 sc, again working over cord as before.  Repeat from * across, skip 5 sc on last ring, sc in next 26 sc, working over cord and increasing as necessary to keep work flat.

Work along opposite side to correspond.

Now working over cord as before, sc in each sc around, increasing as necessary at ends of oval to keep work flat, until piece measures 8 x 12 inches.

Cut off cord and sl st in next 2 sts. Fasten off.

Medium Mat

Using 4 rings (instead of 5) in the center, work as for Large mat until piece measures 7 x 10 inches.

Small Mat

Using 3 (instead of 5) rings in the center, work as for Large mat until piece measures 6 x 8 inches.
