Free Crochet Pattern for a vintage hat with looped fringe

Materials

  • 2 balls Patons Fuzzy Wuzzy Angora fingering weight 55% angora / 45% wool
  • Crochet Hooks old UK sizes 6 and 11 / US 8/H and C / Metric 5mm and 2.75mm

Gauge

4 dc in depth = 1 inch using No. 6 H ook and double Angora.

Size

To fit average size 20″-22″

DC = UK double crochet or US single crochet

WOH = wool over hook or wool round hook

Pattern

The Top

Using Old UK No. 6 Crochet Hook and double Angora, make 4 chain, join with sl. st. to form a ring.

Commence inc. as follows:

1st round: 8 dc into ring.

2nd and every alt. round: * 1 dc on 1 dc, rep. from * to end of round.

3rd and 5th rounds: * 2 dc on 1 dc, rep. from * to end of round.

7th round: * 1 dc on 1 dc, 2 dc on 1 dc, rep. from * to end of round.

9th round: * 1 dc on 1 dc, rep. from * to end of round.

11th round: * 2 dc on 2 dc, 2 dc on 1 dc, rep. from * to end of round.

13th round: As 9th round.

15th round: * 3 dc on 3 dc, 2 dc on 1 dc, rep. from * to end of round. (80 dc)

Fasten off.

The Fringed Edging

Using old UK No. 11 Crochet Hook and single Angora, make 113 chain.

1st row: 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, * 1 dc in 1 ch, rep. from * to end of row, turn. (112 dc)

2nd row: Make loop as follows: 1 ch, (1 ch at beg. of row forms last st. of next row throughout), * working through both loops of dc throughout, insert hook in next dc, wrap Angora round finger once, woh, draw Angora through dc, woh, draw Angora through two loops on hook, rep. from * to end of row, turn.

3rd row: 1 ch, * 1 dc in one st., rep. from * to end of row, turn.

Rep. 2nd and 3rd rows four times, then 2nd row once.

Do not break off wool.

Finishing

Join ends of fringed edging.

Join top to fringed edging by working a round of dc through both edges together, decreasing 32 sts. of fringed edging evenly in round. (To decrease, insert Hook through next st. of fringe, draw loop through, insert Hook through next st. of fringe and top, draw loop through, woh, draw loop through 3 loops on hook.)
