Lois Dressing Jacket in Crochet

Shell patterned dressing jacket with long sleeves

This pattern uses UK crochet terms. UK double crochet = US single crochet, UK treble = US double crochet and so on.

Materials

10 ozs Beehive “Lady Betty” Fleecy, 3-ply – the original was worked with 6 ozs. Pink (shade 913) and 4 ozs. Blue (shade 912).

A UK No. 12/2.75mm/US C-2 Crochet Hook.

Measurements

Length from top of shoulder – 19½ ins.
Width all round at under-arm – 42 ins.
Length of sleeve from under-arm – 15 ins.

Tension

Work at a tension to produce the trebles 7/8 of an inch in height and the dc loosely throughout.

When joining in the wool it is necessary to draw the colour to be used, through, to form the loop of the last stitch of the colour just used.

Pattern

Using the Blue Wool, double, and commencing at the lower edge, make 181 chain very loosely.

Break off the Blue Wool.

1st row: Using the Pink Wool single, and taking the top thread of ch only throughout, 1 dc in first ch, * miss 2 ch, 7 tr in next ch, miss 2 ch, 1 dc in 1 ch, repeat from * twenty-nine times.

Break off the Pink Wool. Join in the Blue Wool, turn.

** 2nd row: 2 ch, * 7 dc on 7 tr, 1 dc on 1 dc, repeat from * twenty-nine times.

Break off the Blue Wool.

Join in the Pink Wool, turn.

3rd row: 3 ch, 3 tr on first dc, * miss 3 dc, 1 dc on 1 dc, miss 3 dc, 7 tr on 1 dc, repeat from * twenty-eight times, miss 3 ch, 1 dc on 1 dc, miss 3 dc, 4 tr on next stitch

Break off the Pink Wool. Join in the Blue Wool, turn.

4th row: 2 ch, 3 dc on 3 tr, 1 dc on 1 dc, * 7 dc on 7 tr, 1 dc on 1 dc, repeat from * twenty-eight times, 4 dc on 4 tr

Break off the Blue Wool. Join in the Pink Wool, turn.

5th row: 2 ch, * miss 3 dc, 7 tr on 1 dc, miss 3 dc, 1 dc on 1 dc, repeat from * twenty-nine times.

Break off the Pink Wool. Join in the Blue Wool, turn.**

Repeat from ** to ** eight times.

Fasten off the Pink Wool, turn.

Using the Blue Wool double, make 63 chain for the sleeve; miss 8 shells, and, using the Blue Wool single, * 1 dc on 1 dc, 7 dc on 7 tr, repeat from * thirteen times, 1 dc on 1 dc; using the Blue Wool double, make 63 chain for the sleeve.

Break off the Blue Wool. Join in the Pink Wool, turn.

The Left Front

With the wrong side of the work facing (the right side of the double crochet), join in the Blue Wool at the front edge with 2 ch, * 7 dc on 7 tr, 1 dc on 1 dc, repeat from * six times, 7 dc on 7 tr, then, using the Blue Wool double, make 64 chain for the sleeve.

Break off Blue Wool. Join in Pink Wool single, turn.

The Collar

Using the Blue Wool double, make a length of chain loosely in multiples of 6, plus 1, sufficient to go round each front and neck.

1st row: Using the Blue Wool single, miss 3 ch, * 7 tr in next ch, miss 2 ch, 1 dc in next ch, miss 2 ch, repeat from * to the last 4 ch, 7 tr in 1 ch, miss 2 ch, 1 dc in 1 ch

Break off the Blue Wool. Join in the Pink Wool, turn.

2nd row: 2 ch, * 7 dc on 7 tr, 1 dc on 1 dc, repeat from * to the end of the row.

Break off the Pink Wool. Join in the Blue Wool, turn.

3rd row: 3 ch, 3 tr in first dc, * miss 3 dc, 1 dc on 1 dc, miss 3 dc, 7 tr on 1 dc, repeat from * to the last 8 dc, miss 3 dc, 1 dc on 1 dc, miss 3 dc, 4 tr in next stitch

Break off the Blue Wool. Join in the Pink Wool, turn.

4th row: 2 ch, 3 dc on 3 tr, * 1 dc on 1 dc, 7 dc on 7 tr, repeat from * to the half shell, 1 dc on 1 dc, 4 dc on 4 tr

Break off the Pink Wool. Join in the Blue Wool, turn.

5th row: 2 ch, * miss 3 dc, 7 tr on 1 dc, miss 3 dc, l dc on 1 dc, repeat from * to the end of the row.

Break off the Blue Wool. Join in the Pink Wool, turn.

Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rows once. Fasten off.

The Cuffs

Using the Blue Wool double, make a length of chain loosely in multiples of 6, plus 1, sufficient to fit the sleeve edge. Work exactly as given for collar.

To Make Up the Dressing Jacket

With a damp cloth and hot iron, press carefully.

Using the Blue Wool, sew up the shoulder and sleeve seams.

Sew on the collar, taking care to make the wrong side of the dc the right side of the work when turned back.

Sew on cuffs and fasten back.

Make two lengths of twisted cord 20 ins. long and sew to each Front at the first shaping, attaching a tassel to each cord.
