Melody Baby Shawl in Crochet

crochet lace baby shawl with scalloped border

Materials

  • Patons Beehive Pearl-Knit, 2-Ply or Patons Beehive Lady Betty, 3-Ply
  • 40 ins x 40 ins – 9 balls
  • A UK No. 10 Crochet Hook/3.25mm/US D-3

Tension

The Pattern

Note: This pattern uses UK crochet terms throughout. UK DC = US SC, UK Tr = US Dc and so on.

Long treble = yarn round hook twice instead of once as for a regular UK treble stitch.

Yrh = yarn round hook

The Centre

Make a chain 36 ins long. Note: If you end up having too many chain once you have worked the first row you can undo the extras.

1st row: 1 tr in 5th ch from hook, make 1 ch, * miss 2 ch, 1 tr in next ch, 1 ch, miss 2 ch, (1 tr, 1 ch) three times in next ch, rep. from * to end of row, working (1 tr, 1 ch) twice in last ch instead of three times, 4 ch, turn. Work should measure 35 ins. across (unstretched).

2nd row: * (1 tr, 1 ch) three times in the single tr of previous row, 1 tr in centre tr of 3 tr group, 1 ch, rep from * to end of row, working 1 tr in 3rd ch of turning ch of previous row, 4 ch, turn.

3rd row: (1 tr, 1 ch) in last tr of previous row, * 1 tr in centre tr of next 3 tr group, 1 ch, (1 tr, 1 ch) three times in next tr, rep from * to end of row, working (1 tr, 1 ch) twice in 3rd ch of turning ch of previous row, 4 ch, turn.

Rep 2nd and 3rd rows until work measures approx. 35 ins. from beg, ending with a 3rd row, turn.

Next round: * Work 1 tr in each sp and each tr of previous row, then 5 tr in corner. Working along side of shawl, work 1 tr in end of each row and 2 tr in each sp, then 5 tr in corner. Rep from * once.

Join with sl st in top of turning ch of previous row. Fasten off.

4th row: 1 tr in 2nd tr, 1 ch, (1 tr, 1 ch) three times in centre tr of 3 tr group, 1 tr in next tr, 3 ch. Do not turn but work along side of border as follows:

Yrh twice as for long tr, draw up loop in the 5 ch loop at beg of previous row, yrh and draw through first 2 loops of long tr, yrh and draw through next 2 loops of long tr (thus holding back on hook the last loop of long tr). Work 2 more long tr’s in same sp. in same manner, yrh and draw through 4 loops on hook, 3 ch (This makes 1 “Cluster” st.) Work 3 more Cluster sts in same sp., 1 dc in next 5 ch loop at side edge, 1 ch, turn.

5th row: In each of the five 3 ch spaces work (1 dc, 1 htr, 1 tr, 1 htr, 1 dc, 3 ch), 1 tr in next tr, 1 ch, (1 tr, 1 ch) three times in centre tr of 3 tr group, 1 tr in next tr, 1 ch, 1 tr in 4th ch of turning ch of previous row, 4 ch, turn.

6th row: As 2nd row.

7th row: As 3rd row.**

Rep. from ** to ** until work measures approx. 4½ yards, ending with 6th row and omitting turning ch in last row. Fasten off.

To Make Up

Beg at one corner and using a flat seam sew border around centre, gathering it at corners to keep work flat. Using a flat seam sew cast on and cast off edges of border tog. Roll shawl in a damp towel for several hours, then spread out flat, pinning each scallop out separately with rustless pins and leave until dry.
