And So To Embroider 32 – Designing from Underwater Life

And So To Embroider bulletin 32 by the NDS

Leaflet 32 in the Needlework Development Scheme’s series “And So To Embroider” covers designing from underwater animals and plants. The samples include:

  • A thread holder for the classroom with simple fish border
  • A felt chair pad designed from sketches of underwater sea life including urchins and star fish
  • A table cloth with simple, stylised design
  • An example of the way water was worked in a traditional Chinese Mandarin’s coat
  • Two samples of the way a fish design can be translated from sketch into embroidery – canvas work and a design worked on poplin.

New stitches introduced in this bulletin are:

  • Honeycomb filling stitch
  • Open couched filling
  • Bullion Stitch

Modern Tutorials

I couldn’t find a tutorial for open couched filling, but it is featured in the book “Embroidery Stitches” by Mary Webb as “Squared Filling Stitch No. 2” on page 156
