Acorn Cap

The acorn cap. A ribbed skull cap with bobbled top.

This vintage skull cap can be very easily updated by knitting the body for an extra 3 inches or so to form a turned up band.

Materials

3 balls of Patons Double Quick Knitting (DK weight) wool

1 pair Old UK No 5 / US 9 / Metric 5.5mm needles

Gauge

4 stitches per inch knit over stocking stitch on 5.5mm needles

Size

To fit average size 20"-22"

Abbreviations

M.B. = Make bobble by P1, K1, P1, K1, into next st., thus making 4 sts. out of next st., turn,
K4, turn,
P4, slip 2nd, 3rd and 4th sts. over first st.

Pattern

Wool is used double throughout.

Cast on 81 stitches.

Proceed in broken rib patt. as follows:

1st and every row: * K2, P2, rep. from * to last st., K1.

Continue in patt. until work measures 4½ ins. from beg.

Next row: * K2tog., P2tog., rep. from * to last st., K1. (41 sts.)

Next row: Purl.

Next row: * K1, M.B., rep. from * to last st., K1.

Shape top as follows:

1st row: * P2tog., rep. from * to last st., P1.

2nd row: * K1, M.B., rep. from * to last st., K1.

Rep. these 2 rows once. (11 sts)

Next row: Purl.

Thread wool through remaining sts., draw up and fasten off securely.

Finishing

Using a fine back-stitch seam, sew up seam.
