Tension

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 8 stitches to the inch in width,
measured over stocking stitch.

Pattern

Cast on 305 stitches.

1st row: K2tog, * P1, K1, rep. from * to last 3 sts, P1, K2tog

2nd row: P2tog, * K1, P1, rep. from * to last 3 sts, K1, P2tog

3rd row: * P1, K1, rep. from * to last st, P1.

4th row: K2tog, * P1, K1, rep. from * to last 3 sts, P1, K2tog

5th row: * K1, P1, rep. from * to last st, K1.

Rep. rows 2-5 incl. three times, then 2nd and 3rd rows once.

20th row: K2tog, knit plain to last 2 sts, K2tog (283 sts).

21st row: K2, * yo, K2tog, rep. from * to last st, K1.

22nd and alt. rows: P2tog, purl to last 2 sts, P2tog

23rd row: K1, * K2tog, yo, K2tog, yo, K1, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Work rows 2-5 incl. three times.

50th row: K2tog, knit to last 2 sts, K2tog (253 sts).

Work rows 21-37 incl., 2-5 incl., then 2-3 incl.

74th row: K2tog, knit to last 2 sts, K2tog

75th row: (Right side of work facing). K2tog, * yo, K2tog, rep. from * to last st, K1. (228 sts).

76th row: P2tog, P1, * yo, P2tog, rep. from * to last 3 sts, P1, P2tog.

77th row: K2, * yo, K2tog, rep. from * to last 2 sts, K2.

78th row: P2tog, * yo, P2tog, rep. from * to last 2 sts, P2tog.

79th row:K1, * yo, K2tog, rep. from * to last st, K1.

Work rows 76-79 incl. three times, then 76th row once. (210 sts).

93rd row:(Right side of work facing). K1, purl to last st, K1.

94th row: P2tog, purl to last 2 sts, P2tog

95th row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

96th row: P2tog, P100, P2tog, purl to last 2 sts, P2tog (205 sts). Cast off.

Work 3 more borders in same manner but do not cast off the fourth piece. Continue on the 4th border for the centre.

The Centre

Next row: Knit plain.

Next row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: (Right side of work facing) P2tog, * pick up loop between st just worked and next st, and knit it tbl, (this will now be termed “Increase”), K1, “Increase”, P3tog, rep from * to last 3 sts, Increase, K1, Increase, P2tog

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

3rd row: K1, * “Increase,” P3tog, “Increase,” K1, rep. from * to end of row.

4th row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep. rows 1-4 incl. until centre forms a square. Cast off.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew corners of borders together.

Sew border to centre of shawl. Press seams.
