Free knitting pattern for a toddler's cardigan with cats on the pockets

Materials

  • Cardigan: 4 ozs. pink, ¼ oz. each white and black 3-ply wool;
  • 4 buttons
  • Jumper: 2 ozs. pink, ¼ oz. white, ½ oz. black 3-ply wool;
  • 4 buttons
  • 1 pr. each Old UK Nos. 12 and 10/US 2 and 3/Metric 2.75 and 3.25mm needles.

Measurements

To fit 22 inch chest;

length from top of shoulder, 12 inches;

cardigan sleeve, 8 inches.

Tension

8 stitches to 1 inch.

Cardigan

Back

Using smaller needles cast on 88 sts.

Work in K1, P1 rib for 1¾ inches.

Commence patt. Change to larger needles.

1st row: (K3, P1), repeat to end.

2nd row: Purl.

Repeat these 2 rows till back measures 8 inches from commencement.

Shape Armholes:

Cast off 6 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows.

Then K2tog at each end of every 2nd row till 70 sts. remain.

Continue on these 70 sts till back measures 12 inches.

Shape Shoulders:

Cast off 8 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows.

Cast off 7 sts. at beg. of next 4 rows.

Cast off remaining sts.

Front (Left Side):

Using smaller needles cast on 48 sts.

Work in K1, P1 rib for 1¾ inches.

Change to larger needles.

Next row: (K3, P1) 10 times, (K1, P1) 4 times.

Next row: (K1, P1) 4 times, purl to end.

Repeat these 2 rows till work measures 4 inches from commencement.

Continue in patt., and shape front edge by K2tog
inside 8 border sts. in every 6th row.

When work measures 8 inches from commencement, Shape Armholes:

Cast off 6 sts. at beg. of row, then K2tog at beg. every 2nd row at armhole edge 4 times, at same time keep shaping inside border at front every 6th row till 30 sts. remain.

Work straight till work is 12 inches from commencement, ending at armhole edge.

Shape Shoulders:

Cast off 8 sts. at beg. next row.

Then cast off 7 sts. at armhole edge twice.

Work 1 inch on 8 border sts. Cast off.

Right Side

Work in same manner as left side, working 8 border sts. at beg. of row instead of end, and reverse armhole shaping.

Buttonholes (4 in all): Rib 4, yo, K2tog, rib 2.

Make first buttonhole in 3rd row; another 3, each one 1¼ inches apart.

Sleeves (both alike):

Using smaller needles cast on 52 sts.

Work in K1, P1 rib for 2 inches.

Change to larger needles. Work in K1, P1 patt., inc. each end of every 6th row till 60 sts. on needle.

Continue till sleeve measures 8 inches.

Shaping:

K2tog each end of every 2nd row till 50 sts. remain.

K2tog at each end of every row till 10 sts. remain. Cast off.

Left Pocket

With pink wool cast on 30 sts.

Work in rib of K1, P1 for ½ inch.

Colour-work in words

Next row: Rib 6, K18, rib 6.

Next row: Rib 6, P18, rib 6. Join black wool.

1st row: Rib 6 P, K3 P, 4 B, 4 P, 3 B, 4 P, rib 6 P.

2nd row: Rib 6, P4 P, 4 B, 4 P, 3 B, 3 P, rib 6.

3rd row: Rib 6, K3 P, 1 B, 1 P, 1 B, 4 P, 1 B, 1 P, 1 B, 5 P, rib 6.

4th row: Work colours as on needle.

5th row: Rib 6, K4 P, 3 B, 2 P, 4 B, 5 P, rib 6.

6th row: Rib 6, P4 P, 5 B, 2 P, 3 B, 4 P, rib 6.

7th row: Rib 6, K3 P, 13 B, 2 P, rib 6.

8th row: Work colours as on needle.

9th row: Rib 6, K3 P, 10 B, 1 P, 1 B, 3 P, rib 6.

10th row: Rib 6, P3 P, 12 B, 3 P, rib 6.

11th row: Rib 6, K3 P, 11 B, 4 P, rib 6.

12th row: Rib 6, P4 P, 1 B, 1 P, 9 B, 3 P, rib 6.

13th row: Rib 6, K3 P, 8 B, 7 P, rib 6.

14th row: Rib 6, P8 P, 4 B, 1 P, 3 B, 2 P, rib 6.

15th row: Rib 6, K2 P, 3 B, 2 P, 2 B, 9 P, rib 6.

16th row: Rib 6, P13 P, 3 B, 2 P, rib 6.

Repeat 16th and 17th rows once.

20th row: Rib 6, P14 P, 1 B, 3 P, rib 6. Break off black.

Next row: Rib 6, K18, rib 6.

Chart for knitting colourwork on left pocket

Work in K1, P1 rib for ½ inch. Cast off.

Right Pocket

Work the same as left side pocket, but from the 1st to 20th rows of cat design work each row from end to beginning, the 1st row will read: Rib 6, K4 P, 3 B, 4 P, 4 B, 3 P, rib 6.

To Make Up

Join the shoulder seams.

Sew strip across the back of neck.

Join side seams, sleeve seams, and sew into armhole.

Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.

Sew pockets in position, cats facing inwards.

With white wool and crochet needle work one row of double crochet around front edges and along edge of cuff.

Jumper

Back

With smaller needles and pink wool cast on 88 sts.

Work in K1, P1 rib for 2 inches.

Change to larger needles. Commence patt:

1st row: (K3, P1) repeat to end.

2nd row: Purl. Repeat these 2 rows till back is 8 inches from the commencement.

Next row: (Armbands) Cast on 8 sts., (K1, P1) 4 times, work to end in patt.

Next row: Cast on 8 sts. (K1, P1) 4 times, work in patt. to last 8 sts., rib 8 sts.

Keeping 8 sts. in rib at each end, continue till work measures 12 inches from commencement.

Shape Shoulders:

Cast off 12 sts. at beg. next 2 rows.

Cast off 10 sts. at beg. of next 4 rows. Cast off.

Front

Work the same as for back till work measures 8 inches.

Break pink wool, join white.

Next row: (K3, P1) repeat to end.

2nd row: Purl. Join black wool, commence design.

Colour-work in words (chart follows)

1st row: K4 W, (4 B, 4 W, 3 B, 6 W) 4 times, end 4 B, 4 W, 3 B, 5 W.

2nd row: P5 W, (4 B, 4 W, 3 B, 6 W) 4 times, end 4 B, 4 W, 3 B, 4 W.

Next row: Using pink wool (K3, P1) 8 times.

Turn for Neck:

Next row: P32. Work in patt. for 2 inches, ending with a purl row.

Cast off 12 sts. at beg. of next row.

Then cast off 10 sts. beg. 2 alt. rows.

Join on white wool where you turned for neck.

Cast off 24 sts., and using pink wool work on remaining 32 sts. to correspond with other side.

Join right shoulder seams of back and front.

Neck:

Join up left shoulder. With pink wool pick up 96 sts. around neck, 24 down one side, 24 across front,
24 up side, and 24 across back.

Work in K1, P1 rib for ½ inch, at same time K2tog twice at each front corner in each row. Cast off.

Armband

With pink wool cast on 8 sts.

Work in rib for 4 inches. Cast off.

Sew to front armholes.

To Make Up

Press lightly on wrong side.

Join side seams.

Sew buttons on back shoulder, and make loops on front to correspond.

Thread darning needle with pink wool, and work eye in each cat, and also whiskers.
