Materials and Size
Patons Beehive Baby Wool or other fingering weight wool
Quantity 1 oz.
Width all round face 12 ins.
Knitting Needles, 1 pair each Old UK sizes 10 and 12/US 3 and 2/metric 3.25mm and 2.75mm
A Cable Needle.
Crochet Hook, Old UK 12/US C-2/metric 2.75mm
To get this measurement it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 8 stitches to the inch in width on larger needles.
The Head Piece
Using smaller needles, cast on 34 stitches.
1st row: Knit plain.
Rep. 1st row five times.
7th row: K1, (K2tog, yo, K4) three times (yo, K2tog, K4) twice, yo, K2tog, K1.
Rep. 1st row eight times.
16th row: K3 (inc. once in next st., K2) twice (inc. once
in next st.) seven times (K3, inc. once in next st.) three
times, K6 (46 sts.).
Using larger needles, proceed as follows:
1st row: Knit plain.
2nd row: K1, purl to last st., K1.
Continue in stocking stitch until work measures 12 ins. from commencement.
Using smaller needles, proceed as follows:
1st row: K6, (K2tog, K3) three times, (K2tog) seven times, (K2, K2tog) twice, K3 (34 sts.).
2nd row: Knit plain.
Rep. 2nd row eight times .
11th row: K1, (K2tog, yo, K4) three times (yo, K2tog, K4) twice, yo, K2tog, K1.
Rep. 2nd row five times. Cast off.
The Font Band
Using larger needles and double wool, cast on 11 stitches.
* * 1st row: P1, slip next 3 sts. on to cable needle and leave at front of work, K3, K3 sts. from cable needle, K3, P1.
2nd and alt. rows: K1, purl to last st., K1.
3rd row: P1, knit plain to last st., P1.
5th row: P1, K3, slip next 3 sts. on to cable needle and leave at back of work, K3, K3 sts. from cable needle, P1.
7th row: Like 3rd row.
8th row: Like 2nd row. **
Rep. from ** to ** until work measures 12 ins. from commencement, ending with 1st row of patt. Cast off.
To Make Up Hood
With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.
Fold Hood in half and using a flat seam, sew up back seam, leaving fullness to the back.
Sew Front band in position, stitching lower edges to Hood.
Using Crochet Hook, make chain 18 ins. long and thread through holes. Finally, press all seams.
