Cherub pram set. Cardigan, leggings, beret and mittens.

Size

To fit 9 – 18 months

Materials

To make the set: 10 ozs. of 4 – ply Fingering Wool.

Made separately:

  • The Coat, 5 ozs.;
  • The Leggings, 4 ozs.;
  • Beret, 1 oz.;
  • Mittens, 1 oz.

2 pairs Needles, Old UK Nos. 10 and 12/US 3 and 3/Metric 3.25mm and 2.75mm

a medium- sized crochet hook,

a small spare double-pointed needle for working the cables.

3 buttons.

Measurements

Coat: Length, 15 ins;

underarm, 22 ins.;

sleeve seam, 7 ins.

Leggings: Length of front seam, 8½ ins.

Beret, around head, 14 ins.

Tension

7 sts to 1 inch on larger needles.

NOTE: If the set is for a girl, work the buttonholes on the Right Front.

The Coat

The Back: Using larger needles, cast on 115 sts and work 12 rows in garter stitch (every row k).

Now work in patt a s follows:

1st row: K.

2nd row: K1, * p5, k1; rep from * to end.

Rep these last 2 rows until work measures 9½ ins, ending with a 2nd row.

Change to smaller needles and dec for waist as follows:

Next row: K1, k2tog, * k1, (k2tog) twice; rep from * until 2 sts rem, k2 (70 sts).

Now work 7 rows in garter st .

Change to larger needles and work in the following yoke patt:

1st row: K.

2nd row: P.

3rd row: K.

4th row: K.

These 4 rows comprise the patt.

Shape Armholes: Cast off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then cont in yoke patt, dec 1 st at both ends of every row until 58 sts rem.

Cont in patt without further shaping until armhole measures 4 ins. on the straight.

Shape Neck and Shoulders:

Next row: (rsf) K21 , cast off 16, k21 .

Cont on the last 21 sts thus:

Next row: Cast off 6, patt to last 2 sts, work 2 tog.

Next row: K2tog, k to end.

Rep these last 2 rows once. Cast off rem sts.

Rejoin the wool at neck edge and work the other side to correspond reversing shapings.

Right Front: Using larger needles, cast on 61 sts and work 12 rows in garter st.

Now work in patt with a garter st border as follows:

1st row: K.

2nd row: * K1, p5; rep from * until 7 sts rem, k7.

Rep these 2 rows until work measures 9½ ins. ending with a second row.

Change to smaller needles and dec for waist as follows:

K7, * (k2tog) twice, k1; rep from * until 4 sts rem, (k2tog) twice (39 sts).

Work 7 rows in garter st.

Next row: K 7, p 2, (inc into next st , k1) twice, inc into next st, p2, k to end (42 sts).

Now work in yoke patt with a cable border up front as follows:

1 st row (wrong side facing): P until 19 sts rem, k2, p8, k2, then k7 (border).

2nd row: K7 (border), p2, “cable 4 back” thus: sl next 2 sts on to a double-pointed needle and leave at back of work, k2, then k the 2 sts from spare needle, now “cable 4 front” thus: sl next 2 sts on to a spare needle and leave at front of work, k2, then k the 2 sts from spare needle, p2, k to end.

3rd row: K until 19 sts rem, then k2, p8, k2, then k7 (border).

4th row: K7 (border), p2, k8, p2, then k to end.

These 4 rows comprise the patt.

Shape Armhole: Cont in patt casting off 3 sts at beg of next row, then dec 1 st at this same edge on the following 3 rows (36 sts).

Work straight in patt with borders correct until armhole measures 3¼ ins. on the straight, ending with a wrong side row.

Shape Neck: Cast off 13 sts at beg of next row, then, keeping the patt correct dec 1 st at neck edge on the following 6 rows (17 sts).

When armhole measures the same as for back to shoulder shape shoulder by casting off 6 sts from the armhole edge on the next 2 alternate rows, work 1 row, then cast off rem sts.

Left Front: Work to correspond with the Right Front with the border and all shapings at opposite ends of the work.

The waist decreasings will be worked as follows: * (k2tog) twice, k1; rep from * until 11 sts rem, (k2tog) twice, k7 (39 sts).

Work 7 more rows in garter st, making a buttonhole in the 4th row thus: K until 5 sts rem, cast off 2, k3.

On the following row cast on 2 sts to replace those cast off.

When the garter st waistband is completed, work the next row thus:

Next row: K until 16 sts rem, p2, (inc into next st, k1) twice, inc into next st, p2, k7 (42 sts).

Now work to correspond with opposite side with all shapings reversed, making 2 further buttonholes at intervals of 1½ ins. (the top one to come about ¼ inch from neck edge).

Sleeves: (both alike) Using larger needles, cast on 40 sts and work 12 rows in garter st, inc into every 11th st on last row (43 sts).

Now work in patt as for back of coat, inc 1 st at both ends of every 6th row until there are 55 sts on needle.

Work straight until sleeve measures 7 ins (or length required).

Shape Top: Dec 1 st at both ends of every alternate row until 43 sts rem and then at both ends of every row until 17 sts rem.

Cast off, working 2 tog at both ends of row.

Collar: Using larger needles, cast on 13 sts and work 8 rows in garter st, slipping the first st purlwise throughout.

Next 2 rows: K9 , turn and k to end.

Work 8 more rows in garter st.

Rep these last 10 rows until collar measures 8½ ins. along the shortest edge. Cast off.

The Leggings

Right Leg: Using smaller needles, cast on 84 sts and work in k2, p2 rib for ½ inch.

Now work the holes for girdle as follows: * k2, yo, p2tog; rep from * to end.

Cont in rib until work measures 2 ins.

Shape Back: 1 st and 2nd rows: Rib 10, turn and rib back.

3rd and 4th rows: Rib 20, turn and rib back .

5th and 6th rows: Rib 30, turn and rib back.

Cont in this way, working 10 more sts on every alternate row until there are 24 sts left unworked, turn and work back, inc 1 st at end of row (85 sts).

Change to larger needles. With right side of work facing cont in patt as far back of coat, inc 1 st at the longest edge on the 3rd and every following 10th row until there are 91 sts on needle.

Work 3 more rows after the last increase.

Shape the Leg: Cont in patt dec 1 st at both ends of the next and every follow ing right side row until the sts are reduced to 43.

Cont without further shaping until leg measures 9 ins from commencement, ending with a right side row.

Shape Instep: Next row: Patt 20, turn and k16 back.

Cont in patt on these 16 sts for 2 ins, then dec 1 st at both ends of the next 4 rows.

Break off wool and join on the rem 23 sts.

With rsf, pick up and k 20 sts along right hand side of instep flap, k the 8 sts across toe, then pick up and k 20 sts along the other side of flap, k the rem 4 sts.

Work 7 rows in garter st. Cast off.

Left Leg: Work to correspond with the right leg, reversing all shapings.

Before shaping the instep, end with a wrong side row instead of a right side row.

The Beret

Using smaller needles, cast on 92 sts and work 4 rows in garter st. Do not k into the back of the cast on sts.

Change to larger needles and work as follows:

1st row: K, inc into every 5th st (110 sts).

2nd row: P.

3rd row: * k10, inc into next st; rep from * to end.

4th row: P.

5th row: * k11 , inc into next st; rep from * to end.

6th row: K.

7th row: * k12, inc into next st; rep from * to end.

8th row: P.

9th row: * k13, inc; rep from * to end.

10th row: K.

11th row: * k14, inc; rep from * to end.

12th row: P.

13th row: * k15, inc; rep from * to end.

14th row: K.

Cont in patt as for yoke of coat for 8 rows without shaping.

Now dec for crown as follows:

1st row: * k2tog, k15; rep from * to end.

2nd row: P.

3rd row: * k2tog , k14; rep from * to end.

4th row: K.

Cont in this way (in the yoke patt) working 1 st less between the decreasings on every alternate row until 20 sts rem.

Break off wool, thread through rem sts, fasten off securely and sew down seam of beret.

The Mittens

Using smaller needles, cast an 37 sts and work 6 rows in garter st.

Now work in patt as for back of coat until work measures 1½ ins. ending with a 2nd row.

Next row: Work ribbonholes thus:

* k1, yo, k2tog; rep from * ending with k3 tog instead of k2tog (36 sts),

Next row: P.

Now work as follows:

1st row: K5, p2 (inc into next st, k1) twice, inc into next st, p2, k to end.

2nd row: P until 17 sts rem, k2, p8, k2, p5.

3rd row: K5, p2, “cable 4 back”, “cable 4 front”, p2, k to end.

4th row: K until 15 sts rem, p8, k7.

5th row: K5, p2, k8, p2, k to end.

Rep the last 4 rows until work measures 2¼ ins. from ribbonholes, ending with a wrong side row.

Shape Top: 1st row: K1, k2tog tbs, k2, p 2, patt 8, p2, k2, k2tog, k1, k2tog tbs, k12, k2tog, k1.

2nd and every alternate row: K or p according to yoke patt.

3rd row: K1, k2tog tbs, k1, p2, patt 8, p2, k1, k2tog, k1, k2tog tbs, k10, k2tog, k1.

5th row: K1, k2tog tbs, p2, patt 8, p2, k2tog, k1, k2tog tbs, k8, k2tog, k1.

7th row: K1, k2tog tbs, p1, patt 8, p1, k2tog, k1, k2tog tbs, k6, k2tog, k1.

9th row: K1, k2tog tbs, patt 8, k2tog, k1, k2tog tbs, k4, k2tog, k1.

10th row: Work across to the 8 cable sts, then p1 (p2tog) 3 times, p1, work to end. Cast off.

Work another mitten the same.

To Make Up

Press work lightly with a worm iron over a damp cloth omitting ribbing and cable borders.

The Coat

Join shoulder seams.

Sew in sleeves.

Attach collar to neck, allowing half of each side of border to overlap at centre front.

Join sleeve and side seams in one operation.

Press all seams. Sew on buttons.

The Leggings

Join up the front and back seams, then sew up the leg seams.

Stitch a piece of elastic under each instep.

Press seams.

Thread waist with a crocheted cord or elastic.

The Mittens

Join up seams and across top.

Press seams. Thread wrists with crocheted cords.

To Make a Crocheted Cord: Using the wool double, crochet a sufficient length of chain and thread through the ribbonholes.

Finish off ends with pom poms or tassels.
