Four Potholders from 2 Balls of Yarn

Four bulky yarn potholders
These patterns use American crochet terms. US single crochet = UK double crochet. US double crochet = UK treble and so on

All four of these potholders can be made from two balls of yarn

No. 9214

Materials

  • Clark’s O.N.T. Cotton Rug Yarn or other 100% cotton worsted weight yarn, 1 ball each of a light and dark color.
  • Crochet hook US size G-6/4mm

This amount is sufficient for 5 pot holders, if colors are reversed.

Pattern

Starting at center, with light color ch 2.

1st rnd: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook.

2nd rnd: * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st into 1st sc made, and fasten off (12 sc).

3rd rnd: Attach dark color in same place as sl st, ch 3, dc in same place, 2 dc in each st around. Join to top of dc first made and fasten off.

4th rnd: Attach light color and work 2 sc in each st around.

5th rnd: Sc in each st around. Sl st in next st, join and fasten off.

6th rnd: Attach dark color, ch 3; then work dc in each st around. Join, and fasten off.

7th rnd: Attach light color, * sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * around.

8th rnd: Sc in each sc around, sl st in next st, ch 15, sl st in next st, and fasten off.

No. 9213

Materials

  • Clark’s O.N.T. Cotton Rug Yarn or other 100% cotton worsted weight yarn, 1 ball of a light color, and 1 ball of a dark color.
  • Crochet hook US size G-6/4mm

This amount is sufficient for 4 pot holders, if colors are reversed.

Pattern

Starting at ring, with one color, ch 12, join with sl st to form ring, ch 1, 11 sc in ring.

1st row: Ch 3 (to count as dc), dc in next 5 sc, pc st in same sc – to make a pc st, ch 1, make 5 dc, remove hook, insert it in ch-1 and draw dropped loop through; dc in same sc, dc in next 5 sc, turn.

2nd row: Ch 3 (to count as dc), dc in next 5 sts, 3dc in next (center) st, dc in next 6 sts, turn.

3rd row: Ch 3, dc in each st to center; in center st make dc, pc st and dc; dc in each st to end of row, turn.

4th row: Ch 3, dc in each st across, making 3 dc in center st, turn.

5th to 8th row incl: Repeat 3rd and 4th rows alternately. Fasten off.

9th row: Attach contrasting color, ch 3, * pc st in next dc, dc in next 3 dc.

Repeat from * across, ending with dc in last st; then continue working along side by making an sc and a long sc alternately – to make a long sc, work as for a regular sc, but insert hook below 2 dc instead of 1 dc. Make 7 sc in ring, and work along other side to correspond.

Join with sl st to top of ch-3. first made. Fasten off.

Materials

  • Clark’s O.N.T. Cotton Rug Yarn or other 100% cotton worsted weight yarn, 1 ball each of a light, and a dark color.
  • Crochet hook US size G-6/4mm

This amount is sufficient for 5 pot holders.

Pattern

With dark color, make a chain 7 inches long.

1st row: Sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across, until piece measures 6 inches. Drop dark color.

2nd row: Attach light color, ch 3, turn, dc in each sc across. Drop light color.

3rd row: Starting at same end as beginning of last row, pick up dark color, ch 1, and work an sc between each dc across. Drop dark color.

4th row: Pick up light color, ch 3, turn, dc in each sc across. Drop dark color.

Repeat the last 2 rows alternately, until piece is square. Fasten off.

Attach dark color to turning ch of first row and work a row of sc closely together around remaining 3 sides, making a ch-10 loop at one corner.

For other pot holders reverse colors if desired.

No. 9210

Materials

  • Clark’s O.N.T. Cotton Rug Yarn or other 100% cotton worsted weight yarn, 1 ball each of a light color, and a dark color.
  • Crochet hook US size G-6/4mm

This amount is sufficient for 4 pot holders.

Pattern

Starting at center, with dark color ch 6, join with sl st to form a ring.

1st rnd: Ch 4, (dc in ring, ch 1) 8 times. Sl st to 3rd st of ch-4. Drop dark color.

2nd rnd: Attach light color, sc in same place as sl st, * sc in ch-1 sp, sc in next dc. Repeat from* around.

3rd rnd: Sc in each st around, increasing as necessary to keep work flat – to inc, make 2 sc in 1 sc. Drop light color.

4th rnd: Pick up dark color and work as for 3rd rnd. Fasten off dark color.

5th rnd: Pick up light color and work as for 3rd rnd.

6th, 7th and 8th rnds: Work around as before. Drop light color.

9th rnd: Attach dark color and make a long sc – to make a long sc, insert hook in sc 3 rows down and directly below next sc on 9th rnd, thread over and pull thread through to the top of the 9th rnd, finish as for a sc, – * sc in next 4 sc, along sc over next sc. Repeat from * around.

Now work 2 more rnds of sc, increasing as before.

Ch 15 for hanger and join with sl st to next sc. Fasten off.

For other pot holders, reverse colors if desired.
