Tension
To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 7 stitches to the inch in width, measured over plain, smooth fabric.

Pattern
The Centre
Cast on 128 stitches.
Knit 19 ins in garter stitch. Cast off loosely.
The Border
Join in wool and pick up and knit 128 sts evenly along one side of Centre.
Purl 1 row. Proceed as follows:
** 1st row: Inc once in first st, * yo, slip 1, K2tog, psso, yo, K3, rep from * to last st, inc once in last st
2nd and alt rows: K1, purl to last st, K1.
3rd row: Inc once in first st, K1, * K3, yo, slip 1, K2tog, psso, yo, rep from * to last 2 sts, K1, inc once in last st
5th row: Inc once in first st, K2, * yo, slip 1, K2tog, psso, yo, K3, rep from * to last 3 sts, yo, K2tog, inc once in last st
6th row: As 2nd row. **
rep from ** to ** fifteen times, then 1st-4th rows incl once. Cast off loosely.
Work a border on each of the remaining sides to correspond.
The Lace Edging
Cast on 8 stitches.

To Make The Mitred Corner
1st row: K2, yo, K2tog, K2, yo, K2.

11th, 13th, 15th, 17th and 19th rows: K4, yo, K3tog, K1.

To Make Up
Using a flat seam sew up 4 corners of border. Sew cast off edge of lace edging to cast on edge. Placing mitred corners to corners of shawl, sew evenly around centre. Roll shawl in a damp towel for several hours, then spread out flat, pinning each point out separately with rustless pins and leave until dry.
