Abbreviations

P = Purl
yo = yarn over
K2tog = Knit 2 together
K = Knit
SL = slip stitch as if to knit
psso = pass slipped stitch over
SSK = slip slip knit

Border pattern is worked over 9 stitches and 6 rows. Main pattern is worked over 16 stitches and 12 rows.

Sample was worked on 130 stitches, 14 border patterns with 2 stitches leftover at each end, and 8 main patterns with 1 stitch leftover at each end. Leftover stitches were worked in stocking stitch (knit on odd rows, purled on even rows).

Border pattern was worked 6 times (36 rows), and main pattern was worked worked 4 times (48 rows).

Sample was worked on 2 mm needles, using Crystal Palace Panda Silk, to give 29sts/10cm after blocking. The sample used 15gm/0.5oz (56.1m/61.2yd) of Crystal Palace Panda Silk for the border and 20gms/0.75oz (74.8m/81.6yd) for 4 repeats of the central pattern.

Choose number of pattern repeats, yarn, and needles to suit your project.

Cast on desired number of stitches.

Knit 1 row.

Purl 1 row.

Work border pattern as follows:
Row 1: P2, yo, K2tog, K3, K2tog, yo

Row 2 and all even rows: P7, K2

Row 3: P2, K1, yo, K2tog, K1, K2tog, yo, K1

Row 5: P2, K2, yo, SL1, K2tog, psso, yo, K2

Repeat these 6 rows until border is desired length (original pattern is 18″, 45cm deep. However the borders can be knit to any length desired)

Knit 1 row.

Purl 1 row.

Work main pattern as follows:
Row 1: K1, yo, SL1, K2tog, psso, yo, K5, yo, SL1, K2tog, psso, yo, K4

Row 2 and all even rows: purl

Row 3: K2tog, yo, K1, yo, K2tog, K2, K2tog, yo, K3, yo, SSK, K2

Row 5: K1, yo, SL1, K2tog, psso, yo, K2, K2tog, yo, K5, yo, SSK, K1

Row 7: K2tog, yo, K1, yo, K2tog, K2tog, yo, K7, yo, K2tog

Row 9: K1, yo, SL1, K2tog, psso, yo, K3, yo, K2tog, K3, K2tog, yo, K2

Row 11: K2tog, yo, K1, yo, K2tog, K3, yo, K2tog, K1, K2tog, yo, K3

Repeat these 12 rows until scarf is desired length (original pattern is 4 1/2ft (135cm) to 6ft (180cm) in length for the centre panel, making a scarf 7 1/2ft (225cm) to 9ft (270cm) long including the borders. However the centre can be knit to any length desired)

Knit 1 row.

Purl 1 row.

Work border as for the other end.
