Anne. Gloves for little girsl aged 2-4. Knit flat on two needles.

Materials

1 ounce 3-ply fingering wool;

1 pair Old UK No. 12 / US 2 / Metric 2.75mm knitting needles.

2-4 years.

Pattern

Right Hand Glove

Cast on 44 sts. and work 2 ins. in K2, P2 rib.

Change to patt. thus:

1st row: K2, “pass the needle purlwise through the next st. and K. into the front of the 2nd st., then K. into the back of
the first st., and slip both sts. off the needle tog. (this will now be referred to as “Twist 2”), K2. rep. from * 5 times, K18.

2nd row: P.

Rep. these 2 rows twice more for the 2-3 year size, and rep. these 2 rows 4 times for the 3-4 year size.

Commence gusset for thumb:

1st row: Patt. 26, K. three times into the next st., K17.

2nd row: P.

3rd row: Patt. 26, inc. into next st., K1, inc. into next st., K. to end.

Rep. the last 2 rows four more times, allowing for 2 extra sts. in thumb gusset after each inc.

Work 3 rows without inc.

The Thumb

Patt. 26, K14, turn,
P14, turn, and cast on 3 sts.

Cont. in st. st. on these 17 sts. for 1¼ ins. (or length required).

Shape Top

(R.S.F.): 1st row: K3, * K2tog, SSK, K3, rep. from *.

2nd row: P.

3rd row: K2, K2tog, SSK, K1, K2tog, SSK, K2.

Break off wool and draw through the rem. sts. Fasten off securely and stitch down seam of thumb.

Cont. thus:

(R.S.F.): Join on wool and pick up 3 sts from the base of thumb, K. across the rem. sts., work 11 rows in patt. for the 2-3 year size and 15 rows for the 3-4 year size.

First Finger

(R.S.F.): Patt. 26, K3, turn.

Next row: P13, turn , and cast on 3 sts.

Cont. on these 16 sts., for 1½ ins. (or length required), then shape top as follows:

1st row (R.S.F.): * SSK, K4, K2tog, rep. from *.

2nd row: P.

3rd row: * SSK, K2, K2tog, rep. from *.
Break off wool and fasten off as for thumb.

Second Finger

(R.S.F.): Rejoin wool and K. up 3 sts. from the base of First Finger, K5, turn.

Next row: P13, turn, and cast on 3 sts.

Work in st. st. on these 16 sts. for 2 ins. (or length required).

Finish as for First Finger.

Third Finger

(R.S.F.): Rejoin wool and K. up 3 sts. from the base of Second Finger, K5, turn

Next row: P13, turn, and cast on 3 sts. and K. in st. st. on these 16 sts. for 1¾ ins. (or length required) .

Finish off as for First Finger.

Fourth Finger

(R.S.F.): Rejoin wool and K. up 3 sts. from the base of the Third Finger, K. to end.

Cont. in st. st. on these 15 sts. for 1¼ ins. (or length required).

Shape top as follows:

1st row (R.S.F.): SSK, K3, K2tog, K1, SSK, K3, K2tog.

2nd row: P.

3rd row: SSK, K1, K2tog, K1, SSK, K1, K2tog.

Finish off as for First Finger and sew right down seam of glove.

Left Hand Glove

Work exactly as for R.H. glove, but read pattern rows in reverse, i.e., 1st patt. row will read as follows:

K18, K2, * twist 2, K2, rep. from * to end.

For commencement of Thumb Gusset:

1st row: K17, K3 into next st., K2, * twist 2, K2, rep. from * to end.

2nd row: P.

3rd row: K17, inc. into next st., K1, inc. into next st., K2, * twist 2, K2, rep. from * to end.

Rep. the last 2 rows 4 more times, allowing for extra inc. sts. in thumb gusset.

Work 3 more rows without inc.

Thumb

(R.S.F.): K30, turn, and cast on 3 sts.

Next row: P17 sts., turn, and work on these 17 sts. and complete to match R.H. thumb.

Cont. thus: K. up 3 sts. from base of thumb and cont. as before across all sts. until glove measures the same as for R.H.

First Finger

(R.S.F.): K29, turn, and cast on 3 sts.

Next row: P16, turn, and work on these 16 sts. as for First Finger R.H.

Second Finger

(R.S.F.): K. up 3 sts. from base of First Finger, K5, turn, and cast on 3 sts.

Next row: P16, turn, and complete as for Second Finger R.H.

Third Finger

(R.S.F.): K. up 3 sts. from base of Second Finger, K5, turn, and cast on 3 sts.

Next row: P16, turn, and complete as for Third Finger R.H.

Fourth Finger

(R.S.F.): K. up 3 sts. from base of Third Finger, K. to end. Work on all sts. as for Fourth Finger R.H.
