Patons Double Quick Knitting (DK weight) wool. 2 balls dark, 2 balls light
1 pair old UK No 8 / US 6 / Metric 4mm needles
Gauge
5½ stitches per inch worked over stocking stitch on 4mm needles
Size
To fit average woman’s size 20″-22″
Pattern
Using Dark, cast on 110 stitches.
Work in K1, P1 rib for 4¾ ins., inc. 1 st. at end of last row. (111 sts)
Proceed in patt. as follows:
1st row: Using Light, knit.
2nd row: Using Light, purl.
3rd-6th rows: Rep. 1st and 2nd rows twice.
7th and 8th rows: Using Dark, * P1, keeping wool at front of work, slip 1 purlwise, rep. from * to last st., P1.
9th row: Using Dark, knit.
10th row: Using Dark, purl.
These 10 row form the patt.
Rep. these 10 rows once.
Keeping patt. correct, work shaping as follows:
Next row: Using Light (K13, K2tog) seven times, K6. (104 sts)
Using Light, work 3 rows in plain, smooth fabric. (purl 1 row, knit 1 row, purl 1 row)
Next row: Using Light, (K12, K2tog) seven times, K6. (97 sts)
Next row: Using Light, purl.
Using Dark, work 4 rows in patt. as before.
Next row: Using Light (K11, K2tog) seven times, K6. (90 sts).
Using Light, work 3 rows in plain, smooth fabric.
Next row: Using Light, (K10, K2tog) seven times, K6. (83 sts).
Continue dec. in this manner until 13 sts. remain.
Work 1 row.
Using Dark, work 4 rows in patt.
Thread wool through remaining sts., draw up and fasten off securely.
Finishing
Omitting ribbing, press lightly on wrong side using a warm iron and damp cloth. Using a flat seam for K1, P1 portion (taking care to reverse seam for fold up at lower edge) and a back-stitch seam for remainder, join seam.
Make a short twisted cord and attach to end of cap. Attach a tassel to end of cord.
Finally, press seam.
