Scarborough Sweater

Bobbled jumper/sweater with short sleeves and shoulder pads

Materials

5 skeins (short sleeves), 6 skeins (long sleeves) “Sun-Glo” Shrink proof 2-ply Fingering Wool, Shade No. 1075 (White);

2 prs. needles, UK Nos 10/3.25mm/US 3 and UK 12/2.75mm/US 2

Measurements

Length from top of shoulder, 19½”;
bust, 32/34″;
length of sleeve seam, 5″.
Note: For 36″ bust, use UK No 9/3.75mm/US 5 instead of No. 10 needles.

Tension

7 sts, 1″; 9 rows, 1″.

Abbreviations

K: Knit.
P: Purl.
St: Stitch.
Tog: Together.
Sl: Slip
Yo: Yarn over
Psso: Pass slip stitch over.
Tbl: Through back of loops.
DC: Double crochet. (US single crochet)
Bl: blue.
St st (Stocking Stitch): K1 row, P1 row alternately.
Garter St: Knit every row.
Moss st: With an uneven number of sts work as follows: K1,* P1, K1, repeat from * to end of row.  Repeat this row throughout.

With an even number of sts work as follows:
1st Row: * K1, P1, repeat from * to end of row.
2nd Row: * P1, K1, repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat 1st and 2nd row alternately.

Pattern

Back

Using No. 12 needles, cast on 102 sts

Work in rib of K1, P1, for 3½” (working 1st row into back of sts).

Change to No. 10 needles, P1 row, purling twice into every 5th st (122 sts).

1st Row: K1, * K2, work 5 times into the next st thus: K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, turn and k the 5 made sts; again turn and cast off 4 sts (this will be referred to as “knot”), K3, (yo, slip 1, K1, psso) 3 times. Repeat from * to last st, K1.

2nd and Alternate Rows: P

3rd Row: K2, * K6, (yo, slip 1, K1, psso) 3 times. Repeat from * to end.

5th Row: K1, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, * K6, (yo, slip 1, K1, psso) 3 times.

Repeat from * to last 11 sts, K6, (yo, slip 1, K1, psso) twice, K1.

7th Row: K2, yo, sl 1, K1, psso, * K2, “knot,” K3, (yo, slip 1, K1, psso) 3 times. Repeat from * to last 10 sts, K2, “knot,” K3, (yo, slip 1, K1, psso) twice.

9th Row: K1, (yo, slip 1, K1, psso) twice, * K6, (yo, slip 1, K1, psso) 3 times. Repeat from * to last 9 sts, K6, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K1.

11th Row: K2, (yo, slip 1, K1, psso) twice, * K6, (yo, sl 1, K1, psso) 3 times. Repeat from * to last 8 sts, K6, yo, sl 1, K1, psso

13th Row: K1, * (yo, sl 1, K1, psso) 3 times, K2, “knot,” K3. Repeat from * to last st, K1.

15th Row: K2, * (yo, slip 1, K1, psso) 3 times, K6. Repeat from * to end.

17th Row: K3, * (yo, sl 1, K1, psso) 3 times, K6. Repeat from * ending with K5 instead of K6.

19th Row: K4, (yo, slip 1, K1, psso) 3 times, K2, “knot,” K3. Repeat from * ending with K1 instead of K3.

21st Row: K5, * (yo, slip 1, K1, psso) 3 times, K6. Repeat from * ending with K3 instead of K6.

23rd Row: * K6, (yo, slip 1, K1,psso) 3 times. Repeat from * to last 2 sts, K2.

24th Row: P

Repeat last 24 rows, and when work measures 12½”, shape armholes by casting off 6 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows.

Cast off 3 sts at the beginning of the next 4 rows (98 sts).

Continue in pattern, and when armholes measure 7″, shape shoulders by casting off 10 sts at the beginning of the next 6 rows. Cast off.

Front

Work the same as for back until armholes measure 5″.

Next Row: Work 42 sts (leave on spare needle), cast off 14 sts, work 42 sts

Continue on last 42 sts and k2tog at neck edge of the next 6 rows, then every 2nd row until decreased to 30 sts

Shape shoulder by casting off 10 sts at armhole edge every 2nd row 3 times.

Join wool at neck edge and work other side to correspond.

Short Sleeves

Using No. 12 needles, cast on 84 sts

Work in rib of K1, P1, for 1″ (working 1st row into back of sts).

Change to No. 10 needles, P1 row, purling twice into every 6th st (98 sts).

Work in pattern, and when work measures 5″ K2tog each end of every 2nd row until decreased to 38 sts. Cast off.

Long Sleeves

Using No. 12 needles, cast on 60 sts

Work in rib of K1, P1, for 3″ (working 1st row row into back of sts).

Change to No. 10 needles, P1 row, increasing 2 sts (62 sts).

Work in pattern, increasing 1 st each end of every 8th row until increased to 94 sts

When work measures 19″, K2tog each end of every 2nd row until decreased to 34 sts. Cast off.

Collar

Using No. 12 needles, cast on 130 sts

Work 8 rows rib of K1, P1 (working 1st row into back of sts).

Next Row: Rib 2 * “knot,” rib 3. Repeat from * to end.

Work 7 more rows rib of K1, P1. Cast off loosely.

To Make Up

Press with a warm iron and damp cloth.

Sew up seams, leaving an opening on left shoulder.

Work 2 rows of DC along shoulder opening and sew press studs on shoulder.

Pleat sleeves around armholes.

Fold collar in half and sew around neck edge.
