Marguerite Pullover

Materials

  • 7 skeins (short sleeves), 9 skeins (long sleeves), “SunGlo” shrinkproof 3-ply fingering woolor “Sun-Glo” shrinkproof crepe wool, shade No. 2138 (Red).
  • 1 skein, shade No. 1075 (White).
  • 1 skein, shade No. 2195 (Yellow).
  • 1 skein, shade No. 2137 (Green).
  • 2 pairs Needles, old UK Nos 10 and 12 / US 3 and 2 / Metric 3.25mm and 2.75mm
  • 1 Crochet Hook.
  • 1 Press Stud.
  • 3 small Buttons

Gauge

7 sts and 9 rows to 1 inch.

Size

Length from top of shoulder 19 inches.

Bust 32/ 34 inches.

Length of sleeve seam 5 inches.

NOTE: For 36 inch bust, use old UK No. 9 / US 5 / Metric 3.75mm instead of old UK No. 10 / US 3 / Metric 3.25mm needles.

Pattern

Back

Using smaller needles and R. wool, cast on 100 sts.

Work in rib of k1, p1 for 3½ inches (working 1st row into back of sts).

Change to larger needles and work in st st, increasing 1 st each end of every 8th row until increased to 114 sts.

When work measures 12½ inches shape armholes by casting off 4 sts at the beginning of the next 6 rows (90 sts).

K 1 row.

Continue in st st with R wool and when armholes measure 4 inches work as follows:

Next Row: K 48, leave remaining 42 sts on a spare needle.

Continue in st st on these 48 sts and make 3 buttonholes as follows:

1st one being 1 inch above opening and two more 1 inch apart.

Button holes

1st Row: P 3, cast off 2 sts, p to end of row.

2nd Row: K to last 3 sts, cast on 2 sts, k 3

When armhole measures 7 inches shape shoulder by casting off 10 sts at armhole edge every 2nd row 3 times.

Cast off remaining sts.

Join wool at centre back, cast on 6 sts, k to end of row.

Continue in st st, keeping the 6 cast on sts in garter st and shape shoulder to correspond with other side.

Front

Work the same as for back until the 23 rows of pattern have been worked.

Change to R wool and continue in st st until armholes measure 5½ inches.

Next Row: K 38, (leave on a spare needle), cast off 14 sts, k 38.

Continue on last 38 sts and k2tog at neck edge of the next 4 rows, then every 2nd row until decreased to 30 sts.

When armhole measures 7 inches shape shoulder by casting off 10 sts at armhole edge every 2nd row 3 times.

Join wool at neck edge and work other side to correspond.

Short Sleeves

Using smaller needles and R wool, cast on 72 sts.

Work in rib of k1, p1, for 1½ inches (working 1st row into back of sts.).

Change to larger needles and work in st st, increasing 1 st each end of every 4th row until increased to 84 sts.

When sleeve seam measures 5 inches k2tog each end of every row until decreased to 60 sts.

Commencing on wrong side of work, work the 23 rows of pattern without shaping.

Continue with R. wool and k2tog each end of every 2nd row until decreased to 24 sts.

Cast off.

Long Sleeves

Using smaller needles and R. wool, cast on 56 sts.

Work in rib of k1, p1, for 3 inches (working 1st row into back of sts).

Change to larger needles and work in st st, increasing 1 st each end of every 8th row until increased to 84 sts.

When sleeve seam measures 19 inches or required length, shape the top the same as for short sleeves.

Shoulder Pads

Using larger needles and R wool, cast on 24 sts.

Work 24 rows st st

Cast off. Fold in half, pad with cotton wool and sew up edges.

Finishing

Press with a warm iron and damp cloth.

Sew up seams, pleat sleeves around top of armholes and sew in shoulder pads.

Work 2 rows of DC (UK double crochet or US single crochet) around neck and 1 row down back opening. Sew on buttons.
