Sprite Baby Cardigan

Textured baby cardigan

Materials and Size

Patons Nimbla Knitting Wool

Size A-18-inch underarm – 2 balls.

Size B-20 inch underarm – 2 balls.

Length from top of shoulder – Both Sizes – 10 ins.

Length of sleeve seam – Size A, 6 ins.; Size B, 7 ins. (or length desired).

Knitting Needles, 1 pair each UK Nos. 11/3mm/US 2 and 13/2.25mm/US 1

Eleven [B-Eleven] Small Buttons.

Tension

9 stitches to the inch in width, measured over stocking stitch.

Instructions are for smaller size A. Larger size B is shown thus [B-…].

Pattern

The Left Front

Using No. 13 Needles, cast on 50 [B-54] stitches.

1st row: * K1, P1, rep. from * to last 2 sts, K2.

Rep. 1st row fourteen times.

16th row: (K1, P1) five times, * work 2 tog, rib 1, rep. from * to last 4 [B-8] sts, K1, P1, K2 [B-(K1, P1) three times, K2] (38 [B-42] sts).

Using No. 11 Needles, proceed as follows:

** 1st row: K1, * K1, yo, K3, yo, rep. from * to last 9 sts, K1, (K1, P1) three times, K2.

2nd row: (K1, P1) four times, purl to last st, K1.

3rd row: * K3, slip 1, K2tog, psso, rep. from * to last 10 sts, K2, (K1, P1) three times, K2.

4th row: As 2nd row. **

Rep from ** to ** sixteen times.

Cast off 5 [B-5] sts at beg. of next row, then dec. once at armhole edge in every alt. row three times.

Work 28 [B-28] rows in patt. without shaping.

Next row: Cast off 13 [B-15] sts, then dec. once at neck edge in every alt. row three times (14 [B-16] sts).

Work 3 rows without shaping. Cast off.

The Right Front

Using No. 13 Needles, cast on 50 [B-54] stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Work to correspond with Left Front, working border and shapings at opposite ends of needle and making a buttonhole in 3rd row and every following 12th row, nine times (10 buttonholes).

To make a buttonhole: K2, P1, K1, yo, K2tog, work to end of row.

The Back

Using No. 13 Needles, cast on 94 [B-98] stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row fourteen times.

16th row: * Work 2 tog, rib 2, rep. from * to last 2 sts, K2tog [B-to end of row] (70 [B-74] sts).

Using No. 11 Needles, proceed as follows:

** 1st row: K1, * K1, yo, K3, yo, rep. from * to last st, K1.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

3rd row: * K3, slip 1, K2tog, psso, rep. from * to last 2 sts, K2.

4th row: As 2nd row. **

Rep. from ** to ** sixteen times.

Cast off 5 [B-5] sts at beg. of next 2 rows, then dec. once at each end of needle in next row and every alt row twice.

Continue in patt. without shaping, until armholes measure same as Front armholes. Cast off.

The Sleeves

Using No. 13 Needles, cast on 58 [B-58] stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row twelve times.

14th row: Rib 4, * work 2 tog, rib 1, rep. from * to last 9 sts, work 2 tog, rib to end of row. (42 sts)

Using No. 11 Needles, proceed as follows:

Work in patt. as given from ** to ** for Back once.

Continue in patt., inc. once at each end of needle in next and every following 6th row, until there are 56 [B-58] sts on needle.

Continue without shaping until side edge measures 6 [B-7] ins. (or length desired) from commencement.

Cast off 2 sts at beg. of every row until 24 [B-24] sts remain. Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

The Neck Band

Using a flat seam, sew up shoulder seams.

With right side of work facing and using No. 13 Needles, knit up 87 [B-87] sts evenly round neck.

Work 8 rows in rib, making a buttonhole as before in 4th row. Cast off loosely in rib.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side and sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves, placing seams to side seams.

Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Finally, press all seams.
